Touring - Help! My knee is going haywire!
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I just started riding after taking the winter off. Three rides to date, one 20 miles one moderate hill; second 25 miles, a few hills; third 17 miles just one hill. Two days later my right knee started to feel like it was filled with mollasis. Three days later I have a lump on my knee. It is on the lower right hand side, and comes into play when I bend my knee completely. I know I have to see a doctor, but has anyone else had this problem?

It could be an issue with your illoitibial band which runs from your hip all the way down to the bottom of your knee, along the side of your leg. Your IT band can flare up after long periods of down time.
However, I agree that you should go see a doctor. It's doesn't do you much good to try to diagnose any health problems over the internet. It could also be a simple bike fitting tweak as well.

Tomn, I have no words of wisdom about your knee...but I had a look at your web site and I love your click-stand.
Too bad your not a doctor, we could work something out! I guess I could start making canes.
Ever heard of ...

SEEING A DOCTOR?!?

You could have:
- Nothing much
- Torn meniscus
- Torn ligament
- Arthritis flare
etc. etc. etc.
DON'T take health advice over the internet, or indeed from anyone who hasn't spoken to you directly AND examined you.
- Best wishes,
DOCTOR Dean (aka Cave),
Great Vic Bike Ride medical team.
PS it helps if you see someone who works regularly in orthopaedics or sports medicine, maybe go to someone who volunteers with a local sports team or cycling club (ask around at the clubs or search for sports medicine physicians).
I am calling my doctor today.
BTW, if your doc isn't comfortable with sports med stuff, don't be afraid to ask for a referral to someone who is.
Thanks to all.
I called this morning to the Sports Medicine Clinic in Seattle, and got in this afternoon. I have fluid collecting, probably from the new demands on the knee. No apparent damage, but I am getting an MRI. The good news is I get to pedal the Chilly Hilly in theree weeks!!!!!
