how do I move the seat position forward on my road bike? Is it just a matter of moving the seat forward on the rails? It looks like that if I did that, the seat would be higher and I would have to lower the seat post. Is that correct?

Or do I have to buy some kind of tri seat?

thanks,

Cliff

You can get one of these - forward post (http://www.profile-design.com/2006_product_pages/seat_post/fast_forward.html)

Decide if you really want it that way, first.

Trying to turn a road bike into a tri bike can have less than enjoyable results. You can definitely get yourself in a forward position on the seat and bars, but it'll make the bike pretty twitchy and ruin the handling. IMHO, if you want aero bars on a bike that doesn't have tri/tt specific geometry, you are better off taking a conservative approach and staying back a bit on the bike. You'll still get some of the benefit without making the bike difficult to control. And, you'll be able to reach back to your regular road bar more easily for braking/shifting.

Are the Clip-ons temporary or is it the beginnings of a dedicated tri-bike? If it's temporary and the bike is your road bike, I would leave the seat alone. Constant moving of the seat can lead to unpredictable positions unless you are very anal about measuring where everything is for each position.

FYI - when you move the seat forward, you are effectively lowering the saddle height.

Actually, sliding the saddle forward on the rails effectively lowers the seat, not raises it.

Thanks, guys. It's definitely a temporary thing for a duathlon in April. I just read somewhere that if you use aerobars, you need to move the seat forward. I'll try leaving the seat where it is.

Give yourself plenty of time with whatever adjustments you make before the event!

... unless you are very anal ...

You don't want to be anal about your seat.
