Touring - Summer 2007 - Your Touring Plans
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
So ..... where are you planning to tour/travel during the summer (or spring, or fall) of 2007?
In April, there is a Randonneuring series on Vancouver Island, which is being run sort of like a tour ... but with really, really long cycling days. I don't know if I'll be able to get there or not, but I've got my eye on it.
In May, I'm hoping to do a short tour in the Canadian Rockies (the Golden Triangle) ... that one should be no trouble to get to as it is practically in my own back yard.
In August, I'm hoping to do a longer tour (a few weeks) in Europe. I'm not sure where exactly in Europe, except that France will be a part of it ... we'll just wing the rest!
In September, there might be a brief trip to Iowa.

We're planning a 600 or so mile loop tour in Indiana. Lafayette to over by Cincinnati to Evansville, along the Ohio River. Planned state park stops like Clifty Falls,a couple three rest days in Madison, Indiana. That kind of thing. This will be the wifes first ever bike tour!

My wife and I are planning 4 weeks in Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Denmark. This swill be her first tour as well.

May, June, July: I hope to do 3 or 4 mini tours to area state parks and friends houses to try out my equipment and prepare for my epic adventure later in the summer.
June: I'm a volunteer baggage handler for the Missouri DNR's Katy Trail ride in June, and since I need to be on the other side of the state to start my volunteer gig, I plan to do a solo trail ride to get there.
August: savage24's epic adventure! Pacific coast, Seattle to San Francisco.
September: Chestertown, New York - Savage Fest! (a weekend gathering for collectors of the Savage model 99 rifle and all things Savage) Not bike related, but it's travel.
In May my wife and I plan on cycling through the length of Italy and parts of Greece (Details on our page).
In September a loop from southern Holland through Germany, Austria, the Czech Rep. and back home.
My friend & I are planning the Lewis & Clark route starting from SeaSide OR in September. If that doesn't pan out we will pedal the coast again. Everything else will be training for that.

12 weeks to go, out our front door and across the country... so many things to do...
A tour of the Erie Canal, then the Rideau canal and maybe the Eastern Townships and hopefully a month long tour of Pacific Mexico. I guess I had better start planning.
- Great Tasmanian Bike Ride starting Feb 9th (I'd better start packing...)
- Hopefully Canterbury/NZ South Island in May
- Maybe some day trips in Germany in May/June if we get there. Anyone know of any tadem hire places in Strasbourg?

I just want to take a second to say: I hate you all.
If I'm lucky I'll get a few weekend tours in around here. *sighs*

+1 with what he said. Although i will get a chance to do some short rides in Portugal and Spain during the month i will be there. Then i have to get back here for the Tour de Kitsap. Mostly overnights and 3 day things maybe a short trip across the state on the iron Horse Trail, until (ta da with a few riffs here) I do the southern tier in about March of 08 :D

Want to see some fun looking stuff? Go here
Now these guys seem to have it together. i heard about it through a couple of members that were riding through town loaded. (their bikes were loaded they were still sober) I bot them pie and coffee and gave them some local route options and they thoughtfully suggested i look into their web place. it's all good.

Just six more weeks before we leave from San Diego enroute to St. Augustine Florida. My riding buddy and I will take 8 to 9 weeks to complete the ride. We plan to mostly camp with rest stops as needed. I will be using four panniers and my buddy will be towing a BOB.
we'll be going to visit Bali, Lombok and Sunbawa this year for four weeks.
A month in Tasmania Feb/Mar (not the Great Tasmanian Bike Ride). My first tour - I'm sure it will be an interesting experience.

Maybe, maybe maybe, i'll finally go on my first tour criss-crossing around the country. A week, week and a half in March-April should do it. 700-900 miles.
Best part - the better half said she's free to come along!
After that, around August : planning to go from Istanbul, Turkey through Georgia to Baku, Azerbaijan - been wanting to see how the house i was born in is holding up.
Lots of maybes, but at least the dreaming make the daily routine seem less grinding.
Good luck to all!

If everything works out, I will be starting an around the world trip mid-May to early June. :D The first leg in Western Europe...basically where ever I can get the cheapest flight. I hope to be gone for 2 years, maybe more. No more sitting behind this wretched computer for 8 hrs. a day:crash::)

On March 10ish or thereabouts I plan to leave St. Petersburg and meander along the Gulf coast towards the Mississippi river. Upon reaching the river I'll turn right and head north along the ACA River Trail to Minnesota. In Minnesota I'll jump on the Northern Tier and head for the Pacific. I plan to stop and smell the flowers, see the worlds biggest ball of string etc., my trip should end sometime in August.
02-05-07, 10:39 AM
I'm planning to do the 7 Hills to the Sea route around N. Florida.
In August I'm biking from Tallahassee to NYC as my moving trip.
02-05-07, 11:19 AM
The Tennessee part of the Mississippi River Trail and maybe the Mississippi part of it to.
I have my plate full with school, work and kids. So I'm doing the only thing you can if you like touring with my limited resources: setting out for one, hopefully two, extended weekend tours from and back to my own doorstep.
02-05-07, 11:41 AM
I'm going to do an Erie Canal tour (http://www.ptny.org/canaltour/index.shtml) in July.
In Aaugust i'm going to do a Cape Breton tour (http://www.atlanticcanadacycling.com/capebreton/tour/) in August. Ahhh...Double-Doubles in the morning and Alexander Keith's at night.
Well I definitely want to ride the Icefield's Parkway in Alberta again this year.
I am also planning on going to India this winter for a couple months. Not specifically for a bike tour, but I have this idea that I'll buy an inexpensive Indian bike and ride it for as long as I want in a particular spot an then give it away and hop on the train to my next destination. I'll only have about 10lbs in a small backpack so I don't need racks or panniers at all.
God bless Alexander Keith! A name fond and true to my heart after I attempted to cycle tour Nova Scotia and ended up in a Yarmouth bar instead as I watched the north atlantic storm raging outside. Uggggh that was touring weather to forget about........

BRAG, Adv. Cycling's "Farm Fresh" tour of northern California, maybe Bike Va.
02-05-07, 01:54 PM
15 weeks left before I head to Vancouver from Los Angeles, and then bear east for the trip home to Toronto. I'm so pumped.
02-05-07, 06:37 PM
I'm driving to my brother's house in Seattle (actually, Edmonds). Then riding up Whidbey Island, then east on Highway 20, over the North Cascades Highway on the Northern Tier. I have old friends in Omak and Colville. Then I'm going to Lake Pend Oreilles in N. Idaho - one of my favorite childhood haunts. Then east on Northern Tier until I get tired of if - hopefully across the Rockies and onto the prairie of eastern Montana. When I've had enough I'll take the train back to Seattle, pick up my truck, and drive home. Solo, self-supported, pulling a Bob trailer.
02-05-07, 10:41 PM
May to August, Anchorage, Alaska to Panama City, Panama
Planning on doing it to benefit charity as well (Lance Armstrong Foundation)
I'll be sure to let you guys know more when I get closer
I'll also keep a travelogue on here ;)
02-06-07, 02:52 AM
I'm planning to ride around the Gulf of Bothnia, wich lies between Sweden and Finland. I'll start off by riding fom my home town Nykarleby to Turku, take a ferry over to Stockholm, ride north along the east cost of Sweden to Haparanda, and back down the west coast of Finland. Should be about 2000 km if i take the shortest route wich I'm not known to do, so I figure about 2200 km total.
I don't have anything epic planned. Hopefully I'll be able to work in a weekend trip or two, with lots of long day trips this summer. I'll be tooling around Western MA and New England in general, hopefully with a foray into New York as well - I haven't ridden there yet, and I'd like to add another state to my (presently short) list :).

March 1st, the Southern Tier Baby!! SD>>>SA Can't wait.
02-06-07, 02:33 PM
last summer was france...i will do something a little closer to home this year: thinking of the san juan islands (although i've done these before), and i'd love to do the continental divide offroad route, but i'm not sure i'll get it planned in time...
also love to hear some ideas for california tours...
02-06-07, 03:01 PM
I'm working up to a pacific coast tour in late august, from seattle to san fran. In the meantime, I'm planning to do some smaller, weekend stuff around point reyes and marin/sonoma. the pacific coast will be my first long (real?) tour and i'm quite excited! I've been trying to corral a friend or two into going, but you know how that is...
Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast if all goes as planned. Might also head to Lake Cowichan for a weekend
02-07-07, 11:31 AM
My 11 year old son and I are doing the Erie Canal.
Just planning a couple of overnighters along the Great Divide route in Colorado. Maybe a weekend tour sometime as well...
02-07-07, 01:00 PM
My first summer of touring will be a few rides up the shore of Lake Michigan to progressively farther destinations. The plan is to Kohler-Andrea State Park and back for a first attempt, Manitowoc area for #2, and Penninsula State Park for the big one. All are planned as round trips.
02-07-07, 01:27 PM
Since I bought my touring bike in October, we've since found out that (unexpected) child #3 will be arriving in July. SO.... I have until late June to do most of my riding <grin>.
I'm taking my 14 yr old son on his first mini-tour in early April to the outer banks of NC. And we'll try to squeeze in some weekend trips to state parks in our region. And I'll get the 4 yr old used to riding behind me in the Trail A Bike, maybe do some 1-night bike camping options nearby. I'm counting my cycling blessings because there are many great rides within a 2-hour drive of my house -- quiet country roads, rolling hills, great state parks, lakes, ocean, mountains.
All of this will help me sincerely root everyone else on as they ride pretty much all over the world -- have you seen the destinations on this thread so far....?.....
I hope everyone has the trip of their dreams this year.

Currently I'm planning on a tour across the country with the Illini 4000! It is a group of 25 college students who are going to ride from NYC to San Diego between May 26th and August 2nd to raise money and awareness for cancer. Here's the link:
02-07-07, 04:49 PM
I've got a bunch of local overnighters planned. Some following scenic routes, some tracing historic routes. I'm going to attempt a few brevet events, but we'll see how far I get with that.
02-07-07, 05:34 PM
St. John's, Nfld. to Vancouver, BC starting in just over 7 weeks. I'm picking up my Rocky Mountain Sherpa 30 on Friday and can't wait to get a couple hundred miles on it to break it in before I go. Should be fun, looks like many others have some big trips planned too.
Best of luck to all on their adventures, and congrats CyKKlist.

I shouldn't talk about my plans because whenever I do, they don't happen...
I had a month in atlantic on my mind but I doubt it will happen this year.
More likely is three weeks on the St-Lawrence north coast, including Anticosti island. Late august.
Apart from that, several 4-5 day trips. If I can do three of the following, I'll be happy:
- Montreal > Quebec City > Magog > Montréal. I have places to stay for 3 nights out of 4 so no camping gear.
- Montreal > Ottawa and back. Canada Day would be a nice time to do that.
- Saguenay fiord again. Loved it in 2006.
- P'tit Train du Nord two ways, this time with a camera.
- Véloroute des Bleuets on a lazy pace (unlikely)
- Toronto > Montreal if Via Rail isn't too much a hassle.
- Bits of Charlevoix.
- Highway 155 along St-Maurice river.
02-08-07, 12:45 PM
Nothing exotic - a week in the Black Hills to include the Mickelson trail, maybe a couple weekenders in N. Wisconsin and/or MN.
02-08-07, 02:23 PM
I am doing the northern tier starting in July after all my exams. Should be a fun little trip before I have to go back for my senior year...

The 4th week of May I'll board an Amtrak train from Fresno, California to Portland Oregon. I'll spend a few days with my brother in Washougal, Washington before leaving on Friday, May 25th from Longview, Washington to Astoria, Oregon. Then it's down the coast following the "Bicycling The Pacific Coast" route as far as Bodega Dunes State Park, California where I plan to turn inland to Martinez. At Martinez I'll put my bike, BOB trailer and myself back on Amtrak back to the Fresno area and home. This will probably be my last hurrah as I will turn 66 years old in April. But who cares what the calendar says? My body and mind say, "Go for it before you get old." And I'm going. :)
In march I am doing a 10 day loop around the top of the south island, New Zealand, around 1000km. Must start training!
Training for my 45-day trip to New Zealand next February! :D

Leaving Phoenix, AZ sometime in late April/early May to head to Laguna Beach, CA. Then turn around and take the RAAM route to CT and then south to NJ. Can't wait.
Gonna bus to Jasper in mid July and ride from there down to Radium, through the East and West Kootenay and on to Vancouver. Should be about 3 weeks, depending on how long I dawdle around the West Kootenays.
On a slightly related topic, has anyone here ridden from Jasper up to Yellowknife? Machka? From Grand Prairie up, is it worth it?
