As I was laboring back to my house on Saturday's ride I was coming up a nice 1/2 mile 5% climb into a strong headwind. Needless to say I was not speeding along. I noticed a pretty large black animal just off the road on the right hand shoulder near the crest of the hill. At first I had a hard time figuring out what it was.

As I got closer I could see it was Goat with a really nice rack. I've encountered all kinds of animals along the road but this was my first goat!! The Goat was really enjoying himself in a thick patch of fescue that was growing up along the road. Although we had not been formally introduced, I knew he was a smart Goat as he had managed to escape from his confinement and found the really premium stuff. There might even have been a McDonalds bag that was hanging out of his mouth.

I've seen how Deer, dogs, cats, squirrels, horses, cows and other animals react to cyclists. Most are very unpredictable. How does a Goat react??? Will he get spooked?? Will he charge and hit me broadside???

As I was plodding up the hill we looked at each other for quite a while. I quickly made a pact with him that if would not charge me, I would not tell his owner that he was enjoying himself immensely outside the fence and would not mess with his little Garden of Eden. We both honored our agreement-he was happy to continue to enjoy his feast and I was content with trudging safely along.

I sure hope the Goat is still okay. He seemed like one of the good guys!!!

Nice story. I've never owned a goat, but I love their cheerful, mischieveous nature. I saw hundreds of goats scampering hither and yon or lazing in the sun when I cycled through Greece. None ever charged me, although one did gently butt me from behind when I was off the bike.

thanks for the info...it is always good to know how the 'normal' animal will respond, considering that this was a normal goat.

Well it sounds like two goats meet.
One goat eating and a old goat riding a bike.:D

Better be careful. Someone might complain about your use of the term "old goat" and get you banned.

One foggy night I was on my way to work the midnight shift at the Boeing Renton plant when a pony loomed up out of the fog. She was walking down the double centerline of Lake Washington Blvd with a 10 foot rope trailing behind. I stopped, gathered up the lead & walked her over to a nearby pasture fence post & tied her there. When I got to work, I called the Sheriff & after a few minutes they agreed to get someone out there with a trailer to retrieve the animal. She was gone the next morning & probably ended up at animal control until someone claimed her. At least she didn't get hit.

Goats can be comical. One time I was at the Fair with my kids and we were petting a large goat on the head. It responded by ever increasing push-back until it was literally shoving me around the stall. The owner said that they do that when you pet them on the head. It's like a mild challenge, I guess. Mostly to get them to play. He said that if they rise up on their hind legs, you're in deep trouble.
