I'll admit...

I had the thought....

OK...16 below the actual temperature this morning. God only knows the wind chill.

BUT....
Anyone here goofy enough to go out in it just to say you rode in this temperature???

DogBoy was complaining on the Mechanics forum that his freehub pawls froze this morning. He listed the temp as -17 which is what we saw in Minneapolis this morning so he must be from up around here somewhere. I just finished a bike last week and not even that has tempted me outside for even a quick ride!

...well, so far no takers.

I DID just ride an hour on the trainer. At least that warmed me up. I was so cold in my basement that I left the fan off and wore a long-sleeved base layer inside...just to sweat it up good.

I rode to work this morning, just to say I did it. But you knew that. And goofy is the right word. When is spring again?

When I went in to work at 7:00 this morning it had warmed up to -14 and I saw some crazy SOB riding what looked like a Gary Fisher MTB. I was so blown away that someone was that hardcore that I drifted out of my own lane and almost got hit. DOH!

Saw a jogger today in my neighborhood, and while on duty Sunday, saw 2 of our local busboys riding home when it was 0. But Im an hour South of you Hip so it had to be a little warmer down here, nearly balmy in fact.

Here in MSP it was about -9F when I went out. I did a two hour off road ride. I was warm and toasty. My buddy commuted to work at -15F and reported same. Get out and do it. It is quite easy to stay warm if you dress properly.

I did it today. -8F this morning with windchills below -20F. I had not ridden yet this week so I was getting itchy. My wife thought (thinks) I'm nuts. :D It really wasn't much worse than a lot of my rides in the 10 to 20 degree range. Of course I was wearing more clothes and it's only 7 miles to work.

Well below zero here in Wisconsin for a week. I've seen three people out on bikes, one on one day when it was -19 with minus 50 wind chill, and I give them major props. I hate staying indoors to ride but I got a touch of frostbite on a toe :( when it was 15 degrees with a 25 MPH wind three weeks back so I've been forced retreat to the indoor trainer and have been going through several bike-o-vision videos and lots of loud music. I have an exercise room with a bunch of equipment set up, but I closed the heat duct so that's it usually about 43 degrees in there when I start in the morning. I usually raise the temp 10 degrees by the time I'm done...so I'm still sweating buckets. It beats sitting on my ass.

But when gets up to 15 again, even with the wind chill, I'm back outside!!:)

Whew! Sounds like frostbite weather to me. About fifteen above is my cut off, and then the windchill can't be too terrible, or the ride too much longer than forty five to sixty minutes. Bicycling is a blast and just about the most perfect way to exercise both body and soul, but you have to be careful. Down time from injury is miserable. I wasn't able to ride for almost a year...

yeah, downtime suxxx. thing for me is, not riding is almost a bad, which is why i've been spazzin' for the past month. i've ridden in +3F, wind chill ???, and my commute at the time was 45+ min. but i won't ride in more than 3" snow, or on ice. sure, it hurts, and frostbite isn't all that far off, but it's riding, and it's good.

I am late to the thread, but below zero weather is a go anytime for me. I gave up my car years ago. I work the night shift full time at the "brown shirted package smashing delivery company" so my commute home (where I put my training time in) is always at the low end of the temp range. -17 deg F or the 20" or snow we just had wasn't a problem. TOROQU is right, it really isn't that hard to stay warm. What's hard is getting the mind set to just ride. :)

I did 8 years with those guys, Pre-load. It took 10 years for the nightmares to finally quit.

Really? I always heard they stuck with you for life or I would have quit almost 22 years ago.

When I started in '85 the wage for PT was awesome, unfortunately it has only gone up $.50 in that time. But now at $27 an hour with benefits (I am a diabetic) and having free time to do the things I really like to do, it's tough to walk away from in spite of the lunacy that goes on there.

Pre-load is the absolute worst, I feel for you my friend!:D
