Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - 27" 36 hole rim?

I would like to have my LBS build me a new fixed gear wheel on a Phil Woods hub. My fixie is an old Trek frame built for 27" wheels. I am accomodating my 700c fixed gear wheel with some inexpensive long reach brakes, but I would prefer to use some better quality standard road brakes so I was thinking about getting the wheel built on a 27" rim. Does this make sense? I do have another 27" frame set up single speed freewheel so having the 27" fixed gear wheel would allow me to easily move the fixed gear wheel between bikes. In the back of my mind is a nagging doubt that it is silly to spend money building a 27" wheel when I have already accomodated the 700c. Another aspect to the equation is that I would really like to use a black rim which may not be available in my preferred Mavice MA3 36 hole in 27". So should I just shut up and get the black 700c rim since the bike is already set up for it anyway?

I say stick w/ the 700c rim and upgrade to a better long reach caliper. Rivendell stocks them. Tiagra is $70 and Ultegra is $115. You were going to upgrade the brakes anyway, correct?

Why are you using a rear brake on the fixed anyway? Unless you are running a flip-flop w/ a freewheel, it's redundant.

i say build a 27" wheel for it.

it will raise your bottom bracket back to the original height, giving you way more pedal clearance for turns.

i have a converted 27" wheel bike and i maintained that wheel size. the rims may not be as strong as a set of double wall 700c's, but theyre way cheaper!

NOS high quality 27" rims can still be found if you want a fancy wheelset, but unfortunately i have yet to find any manufactorers of 27" black rims, or double walled ones. id have a set of those in a heartbeat if i could find a black set!

The 27" rim will limit your tire options.

good point, you will have a MUCH MUCH smaller selection of tires, but high quality 27" tires can still be found....none with cool ass colored striped in them though

As you may have noticed from my posts to a couple of other threads I took your advice and went with a 700c wheel. That way I was able to use a black rim and I can still use my Avocet Cross II tires.
