Commuting - Its ride your bike to work month

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Does not knowing make me lesser of a cyclist?
Anybody doing this already?

Hey Mike! Havent seen on online for quite some time, welcome back!
I have been commuting half way to work each day this week, I hope to move to full time commuting next week. I am still trying to figure out how to wake up at 7am, I am not much of a morning person... :)

Geez I wish I could commute on my bike. It would definitely help me deal with the stress. Making excuses here... It's just too damn far. I live 30 miles away and thats all freeway. A non-freeway route would push each leg to 40-45+ miles. And some of the neighborhoods I'd have to ride through..... No way man. Oh, woe is me.

Thanks. I have been under two rocks. One is work and the other is rehabing a dolphin that stranded down here.
As for the morning person comment, you are not alone. My subconciense keeps hitting the snooze.

I have the opposite problem. I wish I could commute on my bike to work too but it's just too darn close... I work out of my home. :o
I do have to go to the Bay Area about once a week but for some reason, I don't think my employer would find it acceptable for me to attempt a 600 mile (each way) commute by bicycle on a weekly basis. ;)
No. There's not a single person on BF who rides his or her bike to work. Except maybe these people. (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=7855) But they're freaks.

Work is 40 miles away with 22 miles of that in a constrution zone that is extremly dangerous at this time. I'd still love to ride to work, but there aren't any shoulders on roads in South Carolina. I used to bike commute when I lived 2.5 miles away everyday, even in the rain.
If it would just stop raining every day this fair weather rider could ride his bike to work.

I would love to bike to work BUT it is 19 miles one way. Some of it does not have an adequate bike lane or trail. I have actually done it on the weekend but I think it would be a bit too far for a work day, especiallly in the morning. Also, there is no shower facilites at work.

It just keeps raining here too.
Officially my employer recognizes and provides incentives in the form of refreshments and prize drawings one week of the ride to work month. They do however promote commuting by bike or carpooling year round. Of course I do work for a little bike manufacturer based out of Waterloo Wisconsin.
That week is next week and I plan to take the mountain bike to work as the roads through town are too pothole infested to take my road bike.
Talk to your company and see if they will throw out some incentives for its employees participating in the bike to work month.

Me and my co worker always take the annual ride to work day the local bike club sponsers here (I think the 16th)off from riding, we call it amateur day this year my goal has been to be as car free as posible (haven't driven to work but twice in the last 2 months and less maybe 5 times since the start of the year) So I will be out there with everybody else :D

It was awesome today on the commute. People must be hearing about it being bike to work month, because the roads were packed with bikers this morning. crossing the bridge into downtown, it almost resembled a critical mass ride, but with everyone obeying the laws! I'm sure that it took many car commuters by surpirse, and hopefully made them consider alternate methods of getting to work...

Hopefully everyone kept their lines. That would have made a nice picture.

Me neither. I hope they aren't going to make us stop in June.

I ride every day also. Rain, wind, sun, traffic, potholes, 12 miles...whatever comes my way. Maybe we need to gently prod some of the reluctant ones to give it a try?
<PEER PRESSURE>
C'mon, everyone is doing it. . .
</PEER PRESSURE>
I wonder if anyone who participates in the publicized event will continue riding to work?

Interesting. I don't see many new faces at all - just the usual suspects along the way in to work. But my route is a bit different than yours. . . or maybe it's just a timing thing?

Bike to work week? Not for me. In my case, it's more like Bike to Work for LIFE! This whole bike to work week is really a non-issue. I no longer get excited anymore. It's like turning on the faucet and saying you found water. I couldn't imagine going for a week without biking to work never mind making it a one week event.
I know this week is make the public aware of alternative transportation but it receives very little media presss. I see the same bike commuters every day for the past 3 years. I live in a small town with over 30,000 people and only a handfull of us use cycles to work. It just dosn't seem to be working.
For those who can't bike to work, you have my sincere condolences. There were only two days I didn't bike to work last year. On those days, I simply didn't go to work.

I've lived in Houston. There's no shame in NOT bike commuting there. You'll maintain a reasonably good life expectancy by staying off the city streets. Unfortunately, it seems even L.A. is more cycling friendly than HOU.
That said, you can always take the bike on short trips to the store, etc.
Best of luck,

I will skip the bike-to-work day ... too many rookies on the roads!!!

Ha, ha, Speaking of rookies or new commuters. I saw a guy yesterday with See thru shorts! The only saving grace was he was wearing a long sleeve dress shirt that had very long tales that covered all the stuff I would rather not see! He was' riding a pretty old (70's era) schwinn road bike. I figure he must be a professor at ASU or something. Guess he likes to use his stuff until the bitter end!

This May is the 47th consecutive National Bike to Work Month.
May 12 - 16 is National Bike to Work Week. (Don't know how many years there has been a bike to work week.)
This Friday, May 16th, is National Bike to Work Day. (Don't know how many years there has been a bike to work day.)

Coincidently, May is also Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month....

I ride my bike to work almost every day... If I was willing to take more time I might even use the one that I have to pedal. Alas, a twist of the wrist is a second best substitute.

I am a die-hard moutain biker, but have recently relocated and found a route to bike commute, so far so good. The only problem is...I get to work, and I am ready to turn around, and keep riding!!

Leave for work 30 minutes earlier and "expand" your commute to include a longer ride. Or make the trip home a different route that takes more time.

Every month is ride your bike to work month for me, it's no different here.

I wake up at 415. Boy do I feel silly!
There is a bike to work day here in San Diego. I drove that day.
Why?
Just like church during christmas and easter....
But at anyrate, there are more and more people riding in on the ferry lately, which means there are more and perhaps bike lanes will get better.. and less traffic.
More people buying bikes might drive down prices a little on some cool gear.
