There are car guys, and there are truck guys.* Truck guys: post the trucks you use to haul your bikes around here. Mine is a 2000 Excursion. This thing has three rows of seats. If I take the third row out, there's a six-foot cargo area back there, and I can still ride five adults in relative comfort. I can easily fit four bikes and a bunch of other stuff.

Please compare the number of miles you drive by yourself or with a couple others in the truck vs. the number of times you have the thing fully loaded. I'm actually disgusted when I see one of those on the road and they are almost exclusively driven with less than 4 people inside. On the rare occasion you fit 5 adults, 4 bikes, and a bunch of other stuff, I'm sure it would be just as economical and environmental to take two cars. Disgusting.

I believe the greatest thing about this country is that our freedoms are clearly laid out for us... and thus we can clearly make our choices... however, I think the framers of our constitution were kinda expecting us to make responsible choices... don't believe that buying an enormocar is a responsible choice. A responsible choice in the US is one in which ones exercise of freedom does not interfere with the freedoms of others. In this case, your freedom to stuff a truck occasionally is countered by
a) Our continued (and increased) dependence upon the Middle East, and the associated loss of life. Massive loss of the freedom to the US as a whole.
b) The effect upon the environment (produces a lot of CO2, the major contributor to global warming), which the White House now agrees is a looming and possibly catastrophic problem for all of us. Loss of freedom for our future (including the children that enormocar owners carry around).
c) Other drivers; the much larger mass of the enormocar encourages others to buy similar enormocars so they have a better chance in an accident. Also, regular vehicles can't see around them, so keep more distance, so the enormocar effectively uses even more of the road, which means that we have less. Loss of freedom for other drivers.
[d... they're a fashion, dammit!)
Yes, we're free. But, if we continue to abuse our freedoms... before long we shall suffer for our lack of responsibility.
Of course, if you live in the sticks, have just one vehicle, have three or more kids, live in an area with many unmade roads, then I agree that you really do need this vehicle, and it is a more responsible chioce than having two smaller cars.

(Let's see how this is misread)

That's when I'm taking the bikes camping (usually involves loading up 4 people and close to a weeks worth of stuff, though). Or if I'm goin' 'froadin'

If I just want to take the bikes with me, it's usually the nimbler, faster, and more efficient Focus.

Ahhh... you have to love people and their holier than thou attitudes because you do something they don't approve of or are different in some way. It's not politically correct to cop that attitude because of race, gender or sexuality now, so the car you drive is the target/reason.

I think that you may be misunderstanding some of the previous posts... who cares if you're different (but I don't think owning a huge truck makes you different), and I don't care what your personal preferences are, in fact I think we care what or who you are... what motivates the posts that you object to is the inherent societal irresponsibility in the choice of a huge truck, not about how wonderfully independant you are. How I wish we also had a bill of responsibilities (1. look after family 2. don't interfere with the freedom of others 3. leave the country a better place when you die than it was when you were born. etc).

Sorry, some attitudes make me sad to be American; I don't want to leave, but the current selfishness is probably going to make me. How can we help people make better 'longer view' choices? Maybe you could help. Doubt it.

Jesus H Christmas, I forget how little utility today's "trucks" offer, or more importantly (imo), how little people use 'em for. Honestly, I'm ranting, you can buy a RV/bus/semi/tank to drive just yourself/bike to the trail if that's your thing, but the fact that we don't have utilitarian half ton trucks sold here anymore is irritating as ****. I can get a 2wd 3-4,000lb+ truck that'll only haul a half ton and gets less than 20mpg, but I can't get a 1,500lb truck with 4wd that'll haul the same and get 50mpg... http://www.vwvortex.com/zeroforum_graphics/screwy.gif

This is my daily driver, although at the moment i'm going through the process of honing it. No worries, it's gotten bigger since the photo. Put on a 3" body lift so I could stuff some Mickey Thompson 38.5 Baja claws under it.

My wallet hated it until I tagged a deer going 65 the other night. Didnt even feel it, if I was in a car I probably wouldnt be posting right now.

Take that Bambi.

EDIT: Infact i've never had a vehicle that got good milage. My T-bird was decent until I swapped the engine with a 351W, pro-charged and built running the giggle juice.
Doesnt it make you feel all giddy inside knowing that 16 year olds can cruise around in 400 brake horsepower rockets?

I dont think that would have really been possible, it was 12:00am on a blind corner coming up a hill and the little pecker just ran out in front of me.

Plus a truck that large isnt exactly responsive.

lyeinyoureye
02-06-07, 12:09 AM
Going 65mph up a hill, around a blind corner, at midnight? I think a house could've jumped out in front of you and you woulda clocked it! But yeah... not much in the way of braking/handling in a big truck. They get going, and don't stop until they slow down enough or hit something bigger than 'em. I'd rather drive a small car and have a bit more in the way of maneuverability, but that's just me. :D

Forgot to mention, 65km/h.

Far from 65mp/h :p. Fastest that truck has ever gone is 120km/h, and thats never happening again, it wasnt even on a real road. It was at my ex's farm on a dirt road.

Don't they recommend not doing that? Seems like most accidents are caused by people trying to avoid fury creatures.
Although in my car I would be dead in either case.

I was gonna say, you must be getting like 5mpg at those speeds. ;)

It depends on your speed. Going from 30mph to 50mph nearly triples your kinetic energy, so something you may be able to do when driving slower, can send you into a ditch when driving 20mph faster. At 30-40mph, where I usually cruise, I've never had trouble swerving/braking to avoid jackrabbits, but if I went 65+mph like every other nitwit around here, I'd probably screw myself trying to do the same thing.

Rant.

I drive the truck in the OP about 5,000 miles a year, so I'm actually using LESS gas total to drive it around than many people, particularly those who choose to live, say, an hour away from work.

It's not just about miles per gallon. It's about one's overall consumption of gas.

H1449-6
02-06-07, 06:39 AM
Another rant.

See the post immediately above, then calculate whether you use more than 500 gallons of gas per year in your primary vehicle. If you do, may I recommend that you either get a more fuel efficient vehicle, or drive less.

No Hemi for me... I could only afford the 6 cylinder for my 2500. :D

The inline 6, that is. Mine's a Cummins Turbodiesel. Sounds even better, pulls more and - for those concerned - gets much better mileage.

but the fact that we don't have utilitarian half ton trucks sold here anymore is irritating as ****. I can get a 2wd 3-4,000lb+ truck that'll only haul a half ton and gets less than 20mpg, but I can't get a 1,500lb truck with 4wd that'll haul the same and get 50mpg...

While it won't likely get 50 MPG, Dodge is rumored to be working on a diesel powered 1500/half ton truck. Watch for it around the 2009 model year or after. Probably the only thing I'd consider trading my 03 for, otherwise I'll keep this one until it dies or I do.

If you've ever had a deer jump right in front of you you will know - there is no way to swerve. You swerve if he is 100 feet ahead of you. When he is 5 feet ahead of you - you pray that he doesnt go through the windshield and kill everybody . And you pray that when you crash you don't hit the trees he was hiding in,. or the embankement and flip.

My bro has been rearended 5-6 times pretty badly and the only thing that is ready to fall off of that bad boy is the bumper. The vehicle has been totaled and they're still using it. And still - being 10+ years old has not seen the inside of a mechanics garage
