Mountain Biking - Roady w/ a MTB, Help Maybe?

Hey Kids,
Okay, I have been a pure roadie for my entire life. Anyhow, I ended up with Trek 950 with a 1" (I think) travel Manitou front fork. I have always been disdainful of people on paved trails with suspension bikes on the paved trails in my city. However I am finding great fun with this thing. I can ride up curbs, neat!
So, I am having fun with this thing riding over crap I couldn't do with my road bike. After all of this rambling I would like some suggestions on tires. Are half slicks worth it? I am not doing any free riding, but I am finding myself taking on some crappy trails just for the hell of it. With my current knobbies riding on streets is hell because of the constant buzzing and the feeling of losing energy via way too fat tires with way too many knobs.
Should I get half slicks? What size? I am currently running 2.10" full knobbies. Any suggestions?

not sure what to suggest on the tire size, but yeah i would say that semislicks are good for that kinda thing

I use the Kenda Alpha Bites (http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524442618124&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302693791&bmUID=1170744196200) on my winter commuter...the raised center tread rolls quickly and smoothly and the side lugs are great when I want to hit the trails during my ride.

Would you prefer I load up my FS bike and drive my SUV to the trailhead rather than ride a couple miles on paved trails?

No, to get the full effect you have to load it on your Bimmer. Then the disdain will be well warranted.

I prefer those big knob job tires for the noise. Lessens the chance of peds or critters not hearing me. I don't really notice much for rolling resistance as it can't touch my road bikes so I don't try and pretend how slow it really isn't. :D

I have tires very similar to the Kenda Alpha Bites and like them a lot. I kinda miss how well my full knobbies would grip in mud and wet grass on hills, but for the most part I like my semislicks better. I don't like the semislicks that are smooth for a 1.5" patch down the middle though, they are smoother and faster and quieter, but they slip way too much for me.

FWIW, I don't drive a German SUV. Oh, I also have the strange ability to remember what people drive if they've mentioned it at least once. I couldn't tell you what thread you wrote you had a WRX but I do remember that you wrote that.

I realized I worded it poorly after the fact. Lesson to be learned from bikeforums is to read carefully and to write precisely. I figured someone would call me on it.

That I can agree with. I had a terrible experience with my old Jetta.

I picked up some ritchey innovaders on ebay for cheap.. They are kinda low volume for a 2.0 though, but they seem really fast and they are real light. I run one on the rear now.
