how quickly will a stretched chain ruin a set of chainrings? will they be ruined as soon as a cassette will or will it take longer?

thanks

A little longer, simply because more wear can be tolerated before the chain will skip over the top of the chainwheel, i. e., there's simply a whole lot more teeth to divide the load on.

If you have a lot of play in your chain put on a differant one.The only way you get a lot of chain wear is from poor maintenance and/or a lot of abuse and use

As soon as 24 half-links measure 12-1/16" center-to-center, replace that chain. Aluminum chainrings are no match for stretched chains!

what should i consider a lot of buse and use. i just want to figure if i should pay more attention to my new chain and cassette or if i just wore it out over lots of riding. the chain has about 750 miles on it and the cassette about 1250 miles on it.

I would just make it a point to measure it a regular intervals to monitor how much the chain is worn. Using John E.'s method is the easiest way. A more exact and quicker way to measure the wear on a chain is to get a Park tool chain checker. It's never really seemed worth the 20 bucks to me when I can just get out the ruler and spend a minute or two making sure it's lined up right for measuring.
