Are regular cycling helmets good enough for mountain biking? Some people seem to be using MotoCross type helmets. Maybe those are for the really dangerous...

yeah, they are for pretty hardcore rides/riders ... but to answer your question, yes, a "regular" cycling helmet is fine for mtb. as long as it protects your head, its fine for whatever you want to do. i have a helmet with a visor and i usually wear that when i hit the trails, but i can also wear my "road helmet" when i mtb and its still fine. no worries man just get out and have fun! (with a helmet!)

Full face helmets are mostly for the freeride and downhill riders, although more and more people are starting to use light full face helmets for the more technical xc.

i endo'd once and scraped up my chin and neck. a full face helmet might have helped there. however that was the only event where a full face helmet would have saved me from any kind of injury. in all my other head hitting accidents my regular helmet has been fine. now that i think of it a full face helmet like a road motorcycle helmet would be nice for riding in cold weather. i've never seen one with a full face shield that is made for man-powered bikes though

I always wear a full face. Don't feel like braking my jaw.

Bike helmets of pretty much any variety are fine for mtn biking. I use a road helmet for better ventilation and lighter weight, since they meet the same standards as mtn helmets.
