The Odyssey freewheel is kind of loud. Most people like loud hubs. If you want a silent hub, get a freecoaster.

The odyssey freewheel is quiet. The Cassete is loud. I think the odyssey one will probably be the quietest

The Ody freewheel is pretty loud for a freewheel.

The odyssey one I have is pretty quiet. I tried getting the grease out of it to make it louder, but I couldn't get it apart. Meh.

Pedal. Don't stop.
Mine doesn't make noise no matter what I do
Why do you want a quiet freewheel? Who cares if it makes noise?

Have any of you thought it might be for a fixie, where one of the points is for it to be quiet?

why would a fixie need to be quiet?
wethepeople

One of the things people like about fixies is how quiet they are on the fixed side of the hub.
But you cannot always run the fixed side and sometimes you freewheel it, and it's still nice to have it dead silent.

Silence is boring. Noise is the best thing to happen to the world, besides myself of course.

Not when you ride a bike as simple as a fixie.

i have an oddesy cassette and depending on the grease that you use in the driver. for it to be silent coat it up real nice and thick with thick grease. for it to be loud just put a light coating of slick honey or run it dry if you want to kill your hub.

People still use freewheels?
FitRider 921

Please tell me what household items i can use to silence my freewheel. I have the nastiest, rustiest, oldest freewheel on my bike. I wouldn't mind if the noise had a rhythm, but mine doesn't. And sometimes, whilst coasting, i can feel the pedals trying to go around due to the friction.
Fanks for all your advice.

Triflow.
I was hoping for more of an answer along the lines of
"Yeah man no worries just mix 1/3 Shampoo, 1/3 Olive oil and 1/3 Vinegar" ...

My shimano freewheel was pretty much silent until the rains came.
Now it's just as loud as the old ACS one I used to have.

ahhh. jacked up chainline and gunked up freewheels will do the trick.
OK peeps, i got a dicta freewheel. When first installed, it was kinda loud, but it had a nice rhythm so i didn't mind. Then i got home and ****ed about with it, trying to get it to quiet down. So i sprayed some WD-40 (Oil in a spraycan), and now it's like my old crappy freewheel and is making ugly grinding noises. I was thinkings of washing it with water ... ? help me please thank you please.

I did say dicta ones were loud but you didn't listen. Try greasing it somehow

It's OK, i tried it in the shop and i didn't mind the noise so much anymore. The dicta one is nicer than the one i had before (which was a B.I.S if anybody knows what that is)...Ok, what grease do i use? I couldn't find any triflow in the shop today.

I don't care what grease i use but apparently a teflon based grease is good
MadMan2k
02-26-07, 02:42 PM
WD-40 is not grease, or lube. It stands for water displacer (or something like that), and it's meant for getting all the water out of things, because it evaporates without leaving water spots or rusting. You can use it for changing grips because it dries cleanly, and is slippery before it dries.
eightdip - teflon based grease keeps dirt/dust from sticking to the grease
