General Cycling Discussion - Fixed Gear on NPR

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Cool. Yet another reason I love NPR. No way Faux News would cover a story about bikes unless a pretty white girl was kidnapped while riding one

"No gears"? These aren't penny farthings.
oh nice, track bars pointed down at the ground, riding on the tops as if they were road drops. It will be a cold day in hell before I ride a fixie on the road without brakes.

Fixies are fun, but I've tried not using the brakes before. It seems like a great way to destroy one's knees, especially on hills and setups with a high gear ratio.

I'm afraid to listen to it. I once heard NPR do NBA sports commentary a few years back. It wasn't Diane Rhem, but that sort of indicates what I heard. I don't think I could handle that again. And a story on fixies could on a wild tangent be extrapolated to a sports story. It's probably not. But I just can't risk it.
I was going to post a question regarding the appeal of fixies to some riders, but now I know.
Thanks for the link, ILTB.

Glad to be of service to an enquiring cyclist in search of knowledge.:)

if you are into the fixed bikes this report might make you roll your eyes, but it is good stuff for the non-fixed rider and great press in general.
I quit reading here:

Yeah...I wonder sometimes why messengers feel like they own the concept of the fixed gear. Wasn't that how bikes were originally devised? I ride fixed with a break for emergencies and definitely get looks from messengers as though I don't belong. Jerk offs.
