How rad is running into Ben Ko at the supermarket and locking my Crosscheck and kid-trailer up next to his Pista Concept? Pretty ****in rad.

Fixed riders running into each other at mundane locations? Almost like we're a real city.

Posting this here, rather than just emailing it to Ben, so that others can comment if they feel like it.

Went for a ride tonight around town; west from my place in Coronado to Encanto Park, then back east to Fifth Ave and then south to downtown. Did a couple circles of our little burg, thinking about possible locations for the sprints on the 4th.

1. South of downtown, either Jackson (my least favorite), Buchanan (a little better), or Lincoln (the best). Good thing about these streets is that they'd be largely deserted at this time, but occasionally cops hang out doen there. Also, the only bars adjacent to that area are Cooper's Town, Jackson's on 3rd, and (shudder) Coach and Willie's. However, Monroe's and Seamus McCaffrey's are both a short ride away.

2. South of Roosevelt on 1st, 2nd, or 3rd St. This area is a ghost town all the time, and the streets are pretty dang smooth. 3rd St especially is way short on stop signs just south of Roosevelt. We might want to post spotters at some of the cross streets, just to be safe. Other pros include the proximity of the Roosevelt and Carly's.

3. North of Roosevelt, Portland and/or Moreland streets, east of Central. Crackheads abound, but otherwise we'd be absolutely left alone. Condition of the streets is fair, and we could probably have an around-the-block criterium if we wanted. Also close to the Roosevelt and Carly's.

I know I only listed locations east of Central, but what can I say, I'm an East Side boy. Holla.

Okay, I'm sick of that old dorky-ass handle (used in the post above). So I got this fancy new one.

Carry on.

I don't think proximity to a bar is necessarily a requirement for a good sprint location, I just love hanging out in bars. Plus Carly's at least is an actual restaurant, so you'd be able to attend an after-event booze-a-rama there. My wife and kid are planning on coming to the sprints at least, and I'm betting my kid is a bit younger than you.

That kid can hold liquor better than anyone else in his preschool phonics class.

02-20-07, 08:04 AM
I was thinking about the area around Carly's. I was going to get in touch with them to let them know about the event as well.

Mike, I need your number again! I got your message, deleted it and realized that I had no idea which missed call was your number. Do you want to head out this week to get a spot on lock for the 4'th? Also we can discuss ride routes.

Anyone else with ideas???

I'll call you today, after I go sell my soul to the devil at a few job interviews.

pinkmike
02-20-07, 08:11 AM
Oh, and by the way, if you want to go out looking for spots this week, tonight is probably best for me. Late, starting out around 9 or so.

oh **** what a jump...
14 89.49 inch
15 83.52 inch
16 78.3 inch

pinkmike
02-23-07, 12:05 AM
Holy crap, that's a big goddamn gear. But the sprint course isn't all that long; you might not even hit the top end of all those 89 inches.

Ew, that sounded gross.

benk0
02-25-07, 01:48 AM
To be competitive... you only need to really top out at 72 or so.... under would actually help you... unless you're leg-pressing like 800+....

pinkmike
02-25-07, 07:54 AM
You're whistling in the dark, Mr 49x19!

(Jesus...competition brings out the worst in me.)

How long (distance) will the sprints be? I'm assuming it will be broken into 2 rider heats. Also, is a group ride meaning the entire group rides together, not a race, correct?

pinkmike
02-25-07, 09:56 PM
The group ride is leisurely. The sprints are a couple hundred yards; I think about two blocks.

Last night was rad. Thanks for coming up everyone!

pinkmike
03-03-07, 07:52 PM
Argh. I'll call you tomorrow after work to find out if the ride has started yet. Let's just hope that Vegan John, Phoenix's Fastest Rickshaw Driver, doesn't show up and totally dominate the sprints.

Actually, I hope he does show, he's a nice guy. But I WANNA WIN THIS THING!

pinkmike
03-04-07, 10:18 PM
Okay, so I didn't win. Some guy apparently nobody knows comes along and annihilates all comers. But that **** was fun. The Numbers race and this sprint series are revealing a part of my character I didn't really know existed: I ****ing love to race.

Thanks to Ben for lighting a fire under the Phoenix bike scene's ass. Thanks to Keith for figuring out the brackets and organzing that ****. Thanks to Ash for dropping the flag, and to the folks who plugged the intersection. Thanks even to the cop who stopped by and told us we could race as long as everyone not actually racing stayed out of the street, and thanks to Emily for talking to him so we all didn't just move to the default "being kicked out" state and go find somewhere else to race. Thanks to Will for being gracious for knocking my ass out in the second round.

Just thanks.

geist
03-04-07, 11:03 PM
Agreed. Thanks to all involved (gotta give extra props to Emily for handling the cop). The sprints were mad fun. Good to see the same people and a **** load of new people turn out. So, what's next?

pinkmike
03-05-07, 12:27 AM
Next?! NEXT?!! I'LL RACE YOU RIGHT NOW, MUTHA****A!!!

Um, get together and ride? I'll most likely have to skip the April Hot City Monthly, as it falls a little uncomfortably close to (a) a wedding I'm participating in as a groomsman, and (b) the due date of The Provisional Daughter To Be Named Later. But if I'm free, and if you're up to it, I can usually go out and ride late at night.

I'd love to organize a race, but I don't think I have the time right now. And I love to actually race too much.

03-05-07, 12:29 PM
Thanks to all who came out. What's next? You tell me!!!

Sprints are just plain fun. I could always be into that again.

Hello,

New to the board and the scene. I grew up racing BMX and riding motorcycles. I have recently gotten bit by the Fixie bug by my friends in SF and Seattle. I have started my search for my bike build. I wanted to start with an older frame and build up a conversion. I have been having trouble finding anything in this city. Any friendly helpful shops? I want to get rolling by March 3rd to come out.

Also check out Slippery Pig. Erik, the owner, rides fixed and SS, and they usually have a wide selection of used road frames fit for conversion. Keep in touch.

What's next? You tell me!!!

1. more sprints!
2. crazy speep-ass hill climb w/ high speed decent contest (fixed gear required!)
3. 4-person "around the block" single elimination criterium - first 2 riders advnace (industrial park would be good for this)
4. George & Dragon to Casey's round trip group ride

Last night was da s*** - thanks everybody.

1. more sprints!

Hell yes!

2. crazy speep-ass hill climb w/ high speed decent contest (fixed gear required!)

Oh hell yes. I nominate "A" Mountain.

3. 4-person "around the block" single elimination criterium - first 2 riders advnace (industrial park would be good for this)

**** yes. Although the likelihood of carnage is extremely high, this would be a blast.

4. George & Dragon to Casey's round trip group ride

Now you're speaking my language. We can take the Grand Canal (http://www.srpnet.com/water/canals/distances.aspx) and turn it into a race; first one to do a shot at the George, ride to Tempe, and do a shot at Casey's, is the winner.

Afraid I have to be on the West Side on the evening of 4/21. On a lighter note, anyone who wants to come see the Breakup Society that night at Casablanca (18th Ave/Van Buren), please do so.
