Living Car Free - Introduction: Two Less Cars!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
While I've posted in Carfree occasionally as I dipped my toe in the water, I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself as I feel I'll be posting here more in the future.
Last weekend I accepted a new job in Northampton MA. and last night the offer on the home we want to buy was accepted. One of the big contributing factors to this job was that it is in a community which has a greenway, and the company, as well as most of the things we need are either just off or not far from this bike path. The house itself is half a block from access to the path, and my work will be just over 3 miles down the path. I had given a serious attempt at commuting with the job I'm now leaving behind, but 21 miles each way, along state roads with no shoulders, and motorists that believe that "Share the Road" means "Share the Lane", began my search for something better. (OK - & the pay doesn't hurt.) The plan is to eliminate the two cars that I previously kept for uninterrupted access to jobsites, and keep just one car for visiting the grandparents, going skiing, and taking our young kids to pre-school on the coldest of New England mornings.
I want to thank you all for the constructive criticism and suggestions I've read over the last year on this sub-forum, and look forward to hearing even more of it along with hopes that I'll be able to contribute as well.

Well, congratulations.
As you have found out, simple planning and a little luck go a long way in facilitating a car-free lifestyle.
redrom,
Congratulations on dreaming good dreams and finding the ways to make them real. :)
If it's not too nosy, can you tell us your reasons for wanting to be carlite?

Well that's alright, Redrom! Keep posting after you've made your move and let us know how things go. And congrats!

Top 5 Reasons for wanting to go Carlite:
1) Money - if the government's not going to save for my retirement, then I'd better get started.
2) Health - if I want a long life, I'm the only one who can make it happen.
3) Earth - Global Warming, Wars for Oil, Polution; I want to leave a small footprint.
4) Enjoyment - whether picking up groceries, commuting, or taking the family for the spin, I love it all.
5) Example - I have two small boys who look to me for clues on how to live; do I show them a father who plays video games and watches T.V. or do we travel everywhere we can, spending time together in the outdoors?

Number 5 is how I looked at it with respect to my kid too watch TV or engage with life? Transportational cycling was one fun thing to do together. When she was small the idea of strapping her into a metal cage seemed like child abuse compared to giving her the freedom to drive her own vehicle.

But don't forget, in moderation and with an eye towards quality, watching a program on TV or enjoying a video game with your kiddoes can be great fun! My son and I particularly enjoy his Nintendo snow board game. I think I could improve my score if I could just stop running into things!!
