Which brand do you like the most and why?
I have only ridden Hayes El Camino and Shimano LX. I love my Hayes but have wondered about Avid disks and High end Shimano disks.

Had all three.
Retired my hayes mags.
Mistake. They were the best, although only by a bit.

This isn't as good as your other post.
I like my XT brakes better than my wife's Juicy 7s.

When did shimano XT become "High end"?
I hate Hayes. I have Juicy 7 now and they are ok. Some friends of mine say Shimano XT is better then Juicy. I think they are about the same. Sorry to all Hayes fans out there but I just hate Hayes. The feel and cheapness of it. I just can't stand it. It makes things easier to setup like huge gaps for pads clearances so there is no drag unlike Hope which really is pain to setup. But then its like a Honda. Good VTEC engine but you need a BMW on the track. Sorry, I don't drive a Civic.
After all, Avid, Hayes and Shimano makes mid line disc brake. If you are into light weight and racing, you need Magura Marta SL. If you are into downhill, you need AVID BB7 NOT HYDRO JUICY or if you are extream, Hope m4 or m6. Avid BB7 is actually very good.
All my racer friend either use V brake or Marta SL. DHers I know use BB7.
I current have Avid Juicy 7 and Hope on one bike, Hope and Magura on another other. Another one with BB7. They are all great. I want to try Shimano when I get a chance and Magura Marta SL when I can afford it.

Avid BB7's all the way!
Why?
Because they have awesome stopping power and modulation! And I don't have to fool around with the mess and trouble of hydros!
DHers I know use BB7.
huh?
...unlike Hope which really is pain to setup.
mine were cake to set-up!:p

mine have all been very well behaved. i have even reduced the length of all the hoses--trouble free. :p
And I don't have to fool around with the mess and trouble of hydros!Good thing we don't apply that wisdom to cars

As long as you steer clear of Hayes you will be fine.
I use and prefer Magura's. There are plenty of good brands out there, those are just the ones that work best for me.

Handbrake, anyone?

Handbrake, anyone?
Hand brakes don't apply a stopping power, it's a holding power and thats why a cable will suffice. Whoever says Hydro's are unreliable have never tried a good pair of hydro's. I never have to touch mine.
As for my preference, all I've really run is Hayes but I do like Magura's quite a bit.

Whatever your smoking, I want lots of it. I cant tell if you pulled that post out of your ass or you have something more spectacular to yank out of there to wow the forum with. Either way I'm awaiting your response.
BB7's may be good brakes, but guess what my not-so-smart pal, if they were THE brakes to have for DH they would be coming equipped on DH rigs. Not chillin' on rockhoppers and similar mid range hardtails.
When did shimano XT become "High end"?
Back in the day 4-pot XT's were some of the best brakes you could get. Even now Shimano XT Hyrdo's are pretty nice.
For me, my Hayes Mags (well one is an old Hayes Purple) are fine. Nothing great but they have been reliable and work. They are all I ask for from them. I prefer the feel of Shimano Saints over Juicy 7's but I am in no way saying that the 7's are crap, they are definately better feeling than my Mags.
I unfortunately have never had the chance to try Hope's on the trail, only just bouncing around in a carpark.
