Road Cycling - Steerer Stems

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

How should I measure my steerer stem for length? I think that the one that is on it now is too short. Using the bar obscuring the front hub method of determing fit, it seems to be too short. I've felt like it had me a little cramped up ever since I got it. I tried moving my seat but it hasn't felt quite right. Thanx in advance.:)

Don't move your seat, that screws up you pedal stroke geometry. The stems are measured center of the steerer tube to the center of the bar. You should really get some expert help from a local shop you trust. It is easy to mess up.
I agree with Breckbiker. A reliable LBS should be able to help you.
The bar/hub method is misleading. You should go with whatever feels best. In your case, it seems that both bar/hub method and comfort are telling you that your stem is too short.

The "obscured hub" is such a load of balony. It may work for medium sized athletic riders on Italian, 1970s style road bikes, but so what. If your bike is long or short, or has more relaxed steering geometry.....I can see my hub and Im quite comfortable.
If you feel cramped, then experiment with different stems. You can alter the bar height and reach till it is comfortable.

Thanks everyone. I guess I'm off to the LBS.
