Touring - Chainring for touring

I have found a very inexpensive source for chainrings which I will share with everyone after I place my order lol.Anyway I am considering a double either 36/46 or 38/48 110BCD with an alpine 13-34 6cog freewheel.My question is I am leaning to the 38/48 but if I get this I can also pick up an extra 34 for like $4 due to placing the order over $20 and am thinking I could put this on in place of the 38 if I do any touring outside of Fl. but am wondering if that will create too large a differential .As I crunch the numbers on the gear inches with the 34/48 this looks like a nice option for touring but have heard that 14 teeth is the largest differential you want to go with but was wondering if 14 would cause any problems?

Any modern front derailleur can handle 34/48. I use this combo with a Suntour Sprint derailleur from the late 1970's.

Another good combo is 48/38/26.

Thanks for the information.I'm trying to stay with a double chainring and 6speed freewheel for simplicity to avoid having to change too many other parts.I'm finding the cog combinations with a 6speed to be as critical in this decision for example the 13/34 I mentioned has good top end/low end range but not many low gears .With 4 freewheel cog options I am looking at 20 different combinations and being a perfectionist noting all have tradeoffs.Also with the 34/48 chainring( and others with large jumps iabove 10 teeth) it looks like I get some overlap between rings as well as more shifting required to get to the next higher gear .Its all got me confused as to what the best choice is for now but I guess if I just keep reviewing the combinations and their pluses and minuses I will made a decent decision in the end.

The big jump at the front might mean a bit of double shifting. For a while I ran a 52/36 front and had to double shift in the middle gears at the rear as the drop was to big.

however, it did effectively give me two sets of gears, one high, one low, but the change quality wasn't good on upshifts.
