Recreational & Family - Khs?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I'm new at this. A few years ago I had a KHS, but lost it in the divorce. I liked it, but I was wondering what their quality is like. I did a search of the forums here, but KHS apparently isn't a valid search term.

All the KHS models I have known have been lower to middle quality. My experience has been that they are mostly better than the department store models. They were heavier and cheaper but durable and reliable.
Like any bike (car, ski, etc.), alot can depend on the year, make and model. The manufac. make a number of models at various pricepoints and quality levels.
People in here can point you in the direction of a bike that will fit your needs if you know what features you are looking for (or how you want to use it) and how much you want to spend.

For recreational riding KHS bikes are fine.
I have met up with people who do some pretty hardcore offroading and have complained about the KHS dirtjump bikes and wot-not, but from what I have read and researched on my own KHS makes a decent entry level recreation rider bike.
Yes, I gave consideration to getting one a few years back but took a different route.

Hmmm, I've seen some guy out on KHS roadbikes kicking some major azz! They have many different levels of bikes. Maybe a model that is slightly better than a dept store bike, but they have some high quality stuff too!
"Flite Team" roadbike is $3599. Is that mid to low level?

At that price I would hope it is high end. Probably Dura-Ace or Record, carbon. At least that is what I would expect for that much.
But again, I really don't know their line at all. I've seen them in rental fleets and as lower cost alternatives to mid and lower level bikes in the few shops I have seen that have them. Neither are they generally well stocked in my area nor heavily advertised in the shop ads.

Back in 99, we had a KHS tandem. Was a mtb style with slicks for less roling resisitance. Beautiful paintjob. much nice thatn what is on our prsent tandem. We paid $799 for the tandem then uprgrades stuff like rear wheel and bottom brackets ($20 each).
I thought it was low level so we sold it. Bought a Burley Duet road tandem for 3 times the price of the KHS. Burley has better components yes, but not a bit of difference in performance.
I still see upperline LHS tandems on the trail all the time. But we ride the trail to the beach and live in California. Many rec riders out here on this trail. Also had a friend that rode a KHS flite. He is super fast, so I figure the bike won't hold you back.
But you're right, not heavily advertised. Only one local shop (of maybe 10) around here carries KHS. Back in 99, I do remeber doing organized centuries where KHS had booths set up for display. KHS does seem to have faded though.:)

I know someone who raced on a KHS XC Team bike (FS, MTB) last year. He had no problems all year and liked it alot. This year I will be one too. I expect my bike to weigh about 26-27#s from the factory with full '07 XTR stuff hung off it. Good components/value for the price. From what I've been told, it actually manufactures and sells its bike to other "manufacturers" for resale.
Thanks for the input. I was looking at the comfort type of bikes. Just something to tool around the neighborhood with, maybe run an errand or two on. I've seen the Schwinn Collegiate Seven and looked at the KHS Smoothie/Westwood/Brentwood styles. (All on-line) I was hoping to find something without a gazillion gears on it. Since I've never been "bicyclic-mechanically" inclined, a used or vintage bike wouldn't be a practical choice. Any advice along those lines? Are Raleighs still considered to good or has their quality gone away?

Like I said, KHS makes a good (some good) entry level bike(s) for recreational purposes.

I have a KHS bike I purchased here in Taiwan. It seems like the bikes themselves are pretty well-built but poorly assembled.
In the process of changing components I found that a lot of things didn't have any lube applied to them when first installed (BB, fasteners, etc.). They do pretty well with construction - but it seems the assemblers don't do such a good job. But that's in Taiwan, where they are assembled here.
I would assume they come boxed and are assembled by the LBS in other countries.

I look at KHS as a good company that provides good gear at a good price ... we have two KHS tandems, I have no complaints at all. I thought that they were well spec'd for the money.
