I am officially sick of winter.
Sick of the cold, the slush, the snow piles, the dark, the black ice and not being able to ride when I want.

Thank you for listening.
That is all.

Quit your bellyachin'! Just yesterday I saw black under the glacier in front of my house for the first time since the great Chanukah Blizzard of 2006. Followed by the New Years Eve Blizzard of 2006, followed by other 5 storms since then. Supposed to have another one tomorrow...just in time for the 9th weekend storm in a row. Ain't El Nino grand?;)

What winter? It's been wicked cold here for the last week or two, but we haven't had any snow to speak of. I've got the Nokians on the mtb, but no frozen roads or trails. Hopefully we get a good snow before the Crocus' come up...:)

I'm not going to complain because i know others to the north have it worse. This has been the worst winter of my winter cycling career so far however. I'm just grateful that the roads have dried up and i don't have to ride studs every day now.

Some of the people here (where I live) keep saying that this winter is really not all that bad. If that is the case ... I'd hate to see a bad winter here!!! We've had blizzards, bitterly cold temps, roads so covered in snow and ice I can't ride outside at all ... I can barely drive my car!

But maybe I'm looking at it from a different perspective than the people who are saying that the winter isn't bad ...

1) My last two winters were gorgeous! Last winter (here as well) there was no snow till sometime in January, and even then not much ... and I don't recall it ever getting really cold. The worst part of last winter was the fact that we got dumped on in March ... just when I thought it was about to be spring. That was a little disheartening. The winter before I was in Queensland, Australia (40+°C) until the end of December, so I missed most of the winter. So by comparison ... this is a bad winter.

2) I think a lot of people spend their winters indoors sitting in front of the TV ... they don't have a deep burning desire to be outside riding their bicycles!! So they don't know what the winter is really like.

3) Those who do want to be outside enjoy winter sports ... so they moan and groan all summer, and are as happy as can be when the snow starts falling.

Personally ... I can hardly wait for spring!!!

You are right about that, last winter 2005/2006 was ridiculous, warm and pretty much no snow :D

"EPIC LAKE SNOWS WILL CONTINUE EAST OF LAKE ONTARIO..." pretty dramatic stuff.

Here the snow is not quite that tall, but they still struggled to keep the roads clean yesterday and today. I just don't think I can cycle in 20 cm or fresh snow. It's not going to happen.

When life gives you lemons...

....go buy a trainer. :p

Count me in. Sick of winter. I suppose I could purchase better equipment but I would rather save for a new bike. When I can't ride my touring bike I am at the gym. *snore*

Don't mind the cold so much except that it makes me feel like I'm riding through six inches of molasses. When 20 km/h is a struggle you know it's just too dang cold. I think next year I escape to the Caribbean for a week.

<Homer Simpson voice> mmmmmhh... Carribean! </Homer Simpson voice>

By the way, when the best you can muster is 10 Km/h, you know the snow's just too deep.

Scrap that.

When you're shoveling snow with the pedals, that's when you know the snow's too deep.

I also am sick of winter, though it hasn't been that bad here (Calgary). Only two really cold snaps and I think about three big snow falls. But... I want to ride my road bike. I want to go out far and forever where you mainly just worry about food and water!

Actually two funny things that I noticed. 1) The road biking forum got really really grumpy about November, I had to stop reading it. 2) I had this picture of Lance Armstrong on my wall that I got as a Christmas gift, and when I took it down and replaced it with a MTB calendar, my overall mental health noticably improved.

So the secret to not hating winter is not to focus on what/where/how you can't ride, but where you can!

I'm still really sick of winter! Two more months... I can make it...

-30C today (-42C with windchill) for my daily commute to work. I'm not sick of winter, but I'm darn glad the fresh snow we had the other day has packed down to be a road of Hardpacked ice and snow again. It makes riding in the winter much more enjoyable.

That said, I am looking forward to my weekly club rides in warm weather, though I'm not sick of winter.

sorry to disagree-
but winter is just getting good.
solid stable cold weather pattern,
predictable snow covering,
& sunny days.
this is one of the best times of the year.

Winter is the best because there are no crowds.

No crowds??? The roads are jammed with idiots who think they can drive on 2 feet of snow over a layer of ice like they were driving on a dry road in the middle of summer. I'm terrified every time I set foot outside the house!!

The funny thing is most motorist feel this way about idiot bikers, that create traffic backlogs, 4 blocks long, while riding in the only cleared section of the road (where car tires run), or ride in the shoulder only to slip and fall in front of a car.

I have seen both happen and it's not a pretty sight. I find most motorist curse us winter cyclists, as such I stay out of their way and only travel down quiet side streets. Even thats not good enough at times :(

I'm speaking from the perspective of the motorist! The idiots who drive here LOVE to tailgate ... and it doesn't matter if the weather is great and the pavement is dry or if we're in the middle of a raging blizzard with a sheet of ice over the pavement.

It scares me half to death just to pull out onto the road in my car, nevermind on a bicycle.

There was a cyclist out there today ... a foot of snow on the ground, the pavement a sheet of ice ... and he was slowly, slowly, slowly pedalling down a rut on one of the main streets of town holding up lines of irritated red-neck pick-up drivers! I almost hollered at him to get off the road!

We just got more snow yesterday. I'm totally fed up with it. It's been solid ice and snow for nearly five months now. I miss being able to ride without the constant battering of ice ridges and chunder on the roads, or the constant fear of getting knocked down if I hit a berm or trench wrong. GIVE ME SOLID EARTH AGAIN!

It's been perfect here in Nova Scotia. Damn cold during the week, but every weekend it seems to warm up to about -2 to -5 (celcius) and sunny for the weekend.

Hardly any snow, but the lakes are frozen solid and the trails are nothing but a sheet of ice, great for studs!! (I stay off road during the winter, not as cold in the woods).

I'm lovin' it!!

I'm REALLY getting sick of winter now that I can't even ride my bike. The snow is piled up so high on the sidewalks and bike paths that they're useless for walking let alone cycling. Also the snow is so far out into the road that it's too dangerous to cycle so close to cars and they don't have enough room to pass. I'm afraid a car will lose control in the slushy snow and slide into me.

It wont be much longer now, the sun is gaining hight, the snow is melting, the bike is getting long needed rest, then wake up call! and we boogie!!!!!

Where do you live? I agree it's been great this winter but I'm a roadie and there's not much in the way of woods and lakes where I am (west end of halifax). The streets have been clear of everything except mounds of salt for the most part and so far it's been a breeze (although I just bought a new bike for bicycles plus and I'm now aching for april to get it out).

I'm in Anchorage. We've been getting hit pretty hard, with over eighty inches so far this year and only one minor meltoff that just created even thicker pack ice. I'll be very happy to be back on terra firma in April.

Well I just got home from what looks like the last cold day in the NYC metro area with morning temps of 8 to 14° and some light wind. I used my Polar Wrap face mask in the morning but did not need it on the way home because I travel NW in the morning and SE coming home and had a nice tail wind.:)

Actually, I'm a roadie. I bought a MTB bike in Nov 05, just to mix things up a bit. Jeez MTBing is expensive, I wouldn't be able to afford it full time. I've replaced the wheels, rear deariller, fork and crank along with 3 chains and 3 cassettes since I bought it. :o

Digger, actually is a phonetic pronounciation of my initials D.G.R. Nothing to do with digging core samples when off-roading, although it still fits. :D

When I was growing up it was common to refer to chezzetcookers as 'clam diggers'. I guess that's just a coincidence. Weird.
