General Cycling Discussion - Ugly Bikes

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Okay, I couldn't resist. Seeing all of the amazing bikes BF members have put together, I thought we needed a thread of ugly-a** bikes. Of course, I can't really fnd the worst I've seen, but I came across this WRONG combination on CL:

I have one that is so ugly that I can only show parts of it. Pictures of the whole bike are too hideous for even the internet:eek:

You could enter about half of Colnago's paint jobs (unless of course you are sent back to 1986 in a time machine). But the extreme power "jet" paint job takes the cake for me. Fighter jets may be cool, but that's like a 3rd grader's bed spread.

Here are not 1, but 2 examples of ugly bikes:
This bike is so ugly, when I bought it and was bringing it home, a group of teenagers pulled up beside me looked at it only (thank God not at me), pointed at the bike and laughed their heads off!:

That first bike wasn't ugly. It looks fine. Now, all folding bikes are ugly. They are the mechanical equivalent of a lanky, awkward, teenage boy.

I damaged the bearings in my right pedal, black set.
Replaced it with the former unsealed bmx red set, right pedal only.
Now you need to visualize that the bike, has a red front bmx caliper brake.
The rear caliper and brace are black, add to this the one red pedal -it looks bad.
Oh ..and on the frame only the seattube is red, all the other tubes black.....and wrapped in old innertubes zip-tied for impacts.
And it's filthy with 4 months of winter commuting and cheap grease.

I really wouldn't call this ugly.
I see it as a possibility for a nice stealth bike or a chance to modify it and make in unique (housing, bar tape, bottle cage, etc) :)
I'd take that frame in a heart beat :)
the bedroom unicycle...I think I just threw up in my mouth

The bumblebee stripes aren't nearly as nasty as plain 80's and 90's mountain bikes. The look of a hard tail mountain bike from that era is just too boring, especially in the drab single color paint schemes, at least the designers of these other bikes were trying to do something that stands out in a crowd.

Oh good, it's working! ;)

With a tire... GREAT!
Without a tire...not so much.:o
I have off-roaded that bike many, many times. I even held the local record for highest air on the "Saddle Mountain Sunday" ride. Over 3' of air, on what is essentially a road bike! At least from the neck down. ;)
It's not what you ride, it's how you ride it!
"Steel is Real" is this bike. 531 is great stuff. I replaced all the "clamp-on" dohickies with braze-ons for a cleaner look. When it eventually gets new paint, I'll have the stamped drop-outs replaced.
Only problem I've had with this bike, it's a wheel eater! I have relaced those hubs 3 times since I've owned it. The previous owner did it that many times as well. And that's why it has no rear tire now. I have to find a single MA40 yellow/green lable in 27". Then I can relace the rear wheel and make it ridable again.
And then, along came the Merlin....
POOF went the money! . . magic!
:p
I also can't really sell the Clive, as it was left to me by a neighbor I grew up across the street from. He was about 12 years older than I am, and he succumbed to the effects of diabetes at age 36. He left the bike to a younger brother with instructions that if it ever got sold, it had to be offered to me first. (I was the "bike crazy" kid in the 'hood) So it joined my stables nearly 20 years ago. And I have to offer it back to the family if I ever decide to sell it.

ok, here's my old commuter. It worked very well, but I'm looking for a hardtail to do this with. I should have got a pic of the other side. it was sprayed with Grabber Green and John Deere Green (just the other side) one day when I was bored.

Nothing wrong with plain carbon. I like the simple, clean looks... but still wary about carbon.

Bikes are like girls- You have to look further than the face to see what they are truly like. The evil ones are often the best lookers- and those that do not look that special are often the best ones to ride.

mine is a ugly bike made from cheap ass parts and it rides smooth. this bike here has been left out from of businesses downtown for hours unlocked and even homeless people passed it right by. But sadly my back rim bent an i am now in the market for a new rim and hub. a new hub cause it was getting old and im thinking of flashing the bike up a bit.
By the way, free spirit frame, steel but light rims, on piece crank legs, old ass mountain bike bars chopped down and a nice 3 dollar seat.

I hate to pass along bad news, this is not a Schwinn Sprint from 1975. The 74 & 75 Sprints had a bent seat tube, for a shorter wheel base, referred to as a "Compact frame", also available in a Paramount version.
Also, Schwinn did not use lugged frames on the 74 or 75 Sprint model.
Could be a newer Schwinn model, yet uncertain if lugged frames from the mid 80s were applied to the entry level Schwinn.
Still it looks to be a interesting FG with contact paper (?), (picture does not allow for pattern to be presented very well)
