I am hoping you guys can help me out. What I am looking for is a good bike for bashing around with my son, who is now getting into bmx and jumping. The last 20" bike I owned was a Haro Sport, back in the days of Brian Blyther and Dennis Wilkerson. My concern is that I am 6'4" tall and am tipping the scales at about 240lbs. What bikes are out there that I won't dwarf? Also I live in an area that only has one bike shop and they seem to be road bike snobs, so any online stores that you guys could recomend? Thanks in advance.

There are a bunch of sites that sell bike stuff...search yahoo! or google, but some sites I know are www.danscomp.com (http://www.danscomp.com) and www.albes.com (http://www.albes.com)

It really depends on how much you are willing to spend. No crappy complete is really going to stay in one piece with your size and weight, unless you magically transform into Mike Aitken (one of the smoothest riders there is). You need a nice complete if you want to hold onto your bike for a while.

I don't mind piecing together something, any brands or models to suggest?

Macneil Deuce Deuce.

Eh, that's competely necessary. Any decent fame with a 21-21.25" toptube would be good for him.

I looked at the duece duece last night. I think I need to find a decent bike shop and go try a couple different size frames and see what works for me. Thanks for all the info guys.

Is that what you meant?

Yes, it was early in the morning and waiting for my bus that was late.

the duece duece is way too long for anybody. if i were you i would go with a frame something around 21-21.5. the premium josh harrington frame is pretty long and is really nice.

maybe try a 24in. cruiser?

Brian

A steel cruiser would be best, unless you're dead set on thrashing a 20" instead.

eightdip

Naa don't get a cruiser, i've met many a tall person that thought it would be wise to go big but they all hated it and wanted to ride on 20's

mude

you'll be happier with a 24

I talked to the guy at our local bike shop and he said he could get a Redline mx24. Any thoughts on that bike?

I've rode a redline mx20, it was ok. You know that is for racing though right. Also how much would it be?

verk182
02-11-07, 12:14 PM
$250. I am a bit leery to get a race bike though, I don't plan on racing just jumping curbs with my son.

those have reallly skinny tires like a bit bigger then road bikes and components are weaker but lighter. If your looking for a 24in maybe a Haro Backtrail X24

FitRider 921

Don't get a race bike... you will most likely destroy it, even doing simple things with your size and weight in mind. Your best bet would be a mailorder.

Why hasn't anybody mentioned the DK General Lee 24?

FitRider 921

I'd rather not suggest a cruiser.

Well, someone did mention a steel cruiser.

go with that or a backtrail x24

I think the bactrail x24 looks like the one for me. The forks look a bit weak, but I guess I could replace them if I tweak them. Thanks for all the input on this.

Unless you plan on running into stuff, the forks are plenty strong. They're bigger tubing than what used to be standard on MTBs, and they're full chromoly.

Just wondering if you guys know anything about Volume bikes? They have one called the sledgehammer, 26" beasty looking thing. Also Mirraco bikes has a 24" cruiser, any thoughts on that one? I just found a bike shop about 45 miles away that carries both these bikes.

premiumbmx2005
02-12-07, 05:45 PM
i like volume and they put out good products so i would trust them. mirraco is also putting out some quality stuff so its all personal preferance. the 24 inch is more manuverable, of course.

FitRider 921

Volume's 20" complete is a piece of crap though.

mude
02-12-07, 06:17 PM
stick with the backtrail or the general lee but mayber try those out if you want the feel of a 24 inch before buying one

there is a general lee on Ebay for $260 shipped, seems like a decent price.

I will let you know how it works out. Should be interesting to see how bad I hurt myself with this thing. Not 16 years old anymore, should be fun though.

No, you shouldn't, because were all sick of hearing how you suck ass at manuals.

FitRider 921

It's true, but I have had an injury that ****ed me over just as much, if not more in the long run then your leg.

Lol, can you put the link to the General Lee. Also what kind of bike does your son have? How old is he?

Broke my hip last summer.

Anything that bumps it can make me immobile for days on end. It's made certain sex positions impossible (mainly the lazy one :p) I cant drive or be a passenger in some cars because of the side bolsters on the seats, I have to be very carefull riding or working around the shop so nothing touches it and I need to get it replaced in a few years.

FitRider 921
02-13-07, 09:40 PM
That sucks, especially about your lazy positions. My leg is probably going to be super fragile and never be as strong for the rest of my life.
