Commuting - Any internal hubs work with shimano 9-sp STI shifters?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I know the rohloff requires some kind of twist shifter to go through its 14 speeds but are there any internal hubs that use STI?

Not that I am aware of. I had an 8 speed Nexus on my cross bike last year and had to use the Revo shifter.......that ws the only thing that would work with it.

I think their shifters are all proprietary. Shimano's are, anyway. Sheldon Brown makes a bar-end adapter for using drop-bars with a Nexus shifter.

Are you building something?

Trigger type rapid fire for the new shimano alfine hub, which should work on the older 8 speed nexus. Good luck finding them aftermarket. Seems they currently are only available to bike manufactures. No brifters for any of the internal hubs. If you are trying to put a nexus or rohloff shifter on dropbars you can try these:

The hub bud barend adapter is shown here:

Walmart has a different approach. See Cigtech's article for drawings and explanation:

The only other thing I've thought of is have a welder/machinest customize a set of roadbars for you.

Shimano makes STI shifters specifically for their Nexus 8 hub, but only for small markets in Asia. I'm looking into making a bike with this.

Sure, although I have to make a minor correction. It's a tapfire shifter/brake lever, which is even better IMO. The part number is ST 8S20.

I think from memory that most internal geared hubs require more cable pull per shift than deralier gears. Each type of hub will be different. What you could do is find out how much pull is requireed, find out how much is given by your shifter then manufacture a small asymetrical see saw type conraption to gain the correct amount of pull. This would be quite easy to make. Two cable bolts, two cable stops a length of metal for the see saw bit and a bolt with a plastic bush for the pivot. Hmm if I could get hold of an intenal geared hub I may make one.

Here is a quick drawing of what I mean. You could elongate the hole for the pivot point so the gain rate could be tweaked and used for other hubs.

Send some mail to Jtek (maker of the Shiftmate, a rollamajig type thing that lets you mix and match Shimamo and Campy drive train parts), they might be intrigued enough to figure something out for you.

Darn it I thought shimano had finally seen the light and was making sti shifters or brifters for dropbars. These are for mountainbike size handlebars. Oh well maybe someday.
