Here's a couple of questions:
1) The 9-speed chain doesn't have a 'special' pin to connect it. However, it does require a $220 tool to install it. (I imagine the tool peens the pin). Can this chain be connected without the tool? How?
2) The 10-speed chain has a special hollow pin with a drive shaft. Is this shaft reuseable?
Is it better to buy a Wipperman with a Sachs-like powerlink?
I know the 10sp requires a special tool if you use their permalink, not sure about the 9sp. I would just get the wipperman chain or the powerlink makes life alot easier.

Actually, if you're using Campy or Shimano chains your best bet for a re-useable link in the Forster (formerly Craig) SuperLink. In general, the SuperLink III (Green Card) works with Campy 10spd; SuperLink II (Pink Card) works with 9 speed, SuperLink I (Yellow Card) works with 8/7 speed. They are available at Branford bike for $7.95/ea (ouch). http://www.branfordbike.com/chains/chains4.html#item5
But, unless you're buying something else from Branford, save $2 or $3 by buying them from Licton's: http://www.lickbike.com/i0338150.htm
