Mountain Biking - I finally decided on a wheelset.

I have been debating for a while on what wheelset I wanted to order for this coming season for a while now. I finally decided yesterday and placed my order. Once again I went with Mike Garcia at Odds and Endos (http://www.oddsandendos.com/) to do the build. This will be my second wheelset from him. My first set, a set for my roadie is still going stron after about three years.

Here is the new wheel build:

WTB labeled American Classic disc hubs (145 grams front, 265 grams rear).

DT Swiss Supercomp spokes (162 grams per wheel). They weigh a little more than the Revolutions but they allow stronger nipples and they are a little stiffer.

Stan's Olympic 347 rim (http://www.notubes.com/product_info.php/cPath/487_488/products_id/296). This is Stan's new rim, gauranteed 347 grams +/- 5 grams.

Blue nipples. The wheels just need a little color, everything else is black.

I am going with Stan's yellow tape and tubeless valve stems.

Total weight not counting the tape and valve stems is supposed bo be 665 grams front, 785 rear.

I'm really looking forward to trying these out. :D

how bout FSA Wheels? the 300 wheelset maybe? I read over MTBR and it seems everyone is praising on its strength

I have no doubt the FSA's are great wheels, everything they make is excellent quality. Well, at least everything I have had of their's was. Only product of their's I had a problem with they warranteed immediately. Only problem with them is they are about a pound heaviers than the wheelset I ordered. Not only that I would have to add another 100 grams by adding the Stan's no-tubes kit. (I know you prefer yes-tubes, I just really like no-tubes.)

These wheels will pretty much be race specific. I probably should have mentioned that. I will also be using a set of the American Classic Disc 350's for racing. I have three other wheelsets for just riding around and for muddy conditions.

Oops, missed that one. I was on the road most of the day (775 miles) so I am a bit behind. The good news is I am going to be able to get some serious miles in this week even if they are on flat ground. :D

(I know you prefer yes-tubes, I just really like no-tubes.)

I watched the Stan's Installation Video (http://www.notubes.com/movieinstall.php) and laughed so hard I nearly cried. Poor Stan gets a little frantic at times.

I can see the hassle being worth it for your application though.

This wheelset costs $449 including shipping.

The best thing to do is give Mike a call and talk to him about the wheelset that will fit you the best. Just make sure you have at least 20 - 30 minutes to talk. He loves talking about wheels and the different components. He wants to make sure you know what you are getting and that you are getting what is right for you.

That's a decent price and would work out to be about $526 cnd

Not too bad. Unfortunately they won't be as light as yours but still pretty light. I was just afraid to go with the CX ray spokes. Heard to much about them flexing and I am really wanting a stiff (for it's weight) wheelset.

Is that rigamarole required for all UST designed rims and tires as well?

If so, Is all that hassle really worth it?

That video of the Stan's was hilarious. I thought the pics on Pete's site were staged or exaggerated for dramatic effect but I can now see that they were very likely real.

I still couldn't have "the" ride to tell how stiff mine are. Awesome conditions here :rolleyes:

There is one issue with my rims. After I washed the bike, lots of water went inside the rims. I don't know if it's because the rims don't have eyelets, or something else, but you might want to ask Mike about that. Just so you know. :)

aren't you light enough to be fine with revolution spokes? you'd save weight with them and i know that is important to you. i have them and i read other places that big people have no problems with them for XC. if you want a strict race only wheel how bad would they really be flexing to mess you up? as far as the the nipple....

you could get the thin revolution and use washers. but maybe they're too delicate. they would get you your stronger nipple though.

I would probably be fine with them but I would rather have the extra stiffness in the more technical sections and in the turns. It's only a couple of grams extra so in this case I'll take the weight penalty.
