Bicycle Mechanics - shifting

i just changed out a 8 speed 12-25 freewheel to a 11-32. the bike has ultegra shifters (2001). the problem is it is shifting opposite than it was before, which in turn won't go into the last and first gears.

any ideas??

What are you using for a rear derailleur? You say 2001 Ultegra shifters but those would be indexed for 9-speed.

Sounds like you also changed the rear derailleur, maybe? The new "rapid-rise" deraillers are low normal, as compared to high-normal of older high-normal ders. Hope you put on a new, longer chain, or added a section to cover the 7 tooth larger cog on the cassette. Are the shifters and cassette both 8-speed?
Should be able to adjust the der to work, even if it is a rapid-rise, but it would still be shifting the reverse of what it used to, if that is the case.

Okay here is the real skinny, God Bless my wife for trying to help out.

I changed out a 9 speed 12-25 to a 9 speed 11-32 so she can climb hills easier.

I replaced the chain and use a on line chain calculator to determine the correct lenght.

Lastly I changed the Ultegra derailleur to a LX Deore long cage.

Everything is adjusted and works fine. She swears the Ultegra Flight deck shifter pattern is reversed.

Your wife and freeranger, above, are correct. That new derailleur is a "low normal" and works the opposite way compared to the Ultegra. Everything is fine but it may take a little getting use to.
