i heard this topic on the radio the other day, and while i expected the Matrix trilogy to be the first thing out of every callers mouth, i thought they missed a few...

what's your most disappointing movie sequal, or trilogy? and if you have more than one, by all means feel free to mention them all...

mine was The Crow. i thought the original was a great movie, but the sequal gave new meaning to the term horrible! then again, i guess any movie where Iggy Pop gets killed in a peep show booth while masterbating, isn't going to be top notch...

a close second was Starship Troopers. i thought the original was a really good movie, but the sequal that went straight to dvd recently made me want to jump off a building, literally. it did a great job of making my opinion of the first one go straight down the toilet, no matter how good i thought it was for the last 10 years...

Mad Max beyond Thunderdome. While released with tepid to very favorable reviews it was a bloated, cliche'- ridden embarrassment to the franchise that sullied my mental image of Max Rockatanski's (sic?) continuing wander through the outback, surviving on brains and heart- storyline.

To assure me my initial impression of the film was not unique, the guy next to me at the men's room urinal after the film, turned to me and so elegantly said, "Man that sucked".

Godfather III - not sure it qualifies as a sequal being the third installment. But it paled in comparison to the first two.

I can't think of any at the moment but one sequal that was better than the original was Aliens. Alien was the orginal film. Segorney Weaver starred in both.

Ooh, that was painful to watch especially Sophia Coppola's brave but Golden Raspberry earning attempt to fill in for Winona (five finger discount) Ryder.

+1 on Mad Max Beyond the Thunderdome. I run a yearly post-apocalyptic film festival at a warehouse in san francisco (6th year now!), and this is a favorite for humor. Last year someone did a storytelling presentation in the style of thunderdome's "long long ago" part with the kids... hilarious.

Another horrible sequel is Alien 3. The screenplay writer completely misunderstood the beautiful arc of the last two films and engaged in existential/pseudo-philosophical ************ for 2 hours. underlying christ imagery--how unique?!?! I just pretend it didn't happen... (ditto with Alien Resurrection)

Then there's The Two Jakes... can you even make a sequel to Chinatown?

i completely forgot about the Final Destination trilogy. i thought the first one was awesome, and i thought the second was pretty good, and was tied in to the first one pretty good. what were they thinking with the 3rd one though? the same theme over and over is going to get old sooner or later, and FD3 was about that time, they should have ended it with FD2 on a good note...

Ghostbusters 2, Star Wars VI, I, and II, Batman 2, 3, and 4, Back to the Future 2 and 3. And whatever the sequel to Silence of the Lambs was. Not the one with Edward Norton, the one with Ray Liotta. That sucked.

The Matrix sequels were okay, not great, but they had their moments. Disappointing, sure, but they weren't horrible, IMO. Though I'm not looking forward to the sequel to V for Vendetta - W for Wevenge. ;)

I like all the Hannibal movies (and the books are fantastic). I think the best one, though, was the least popular...Manhunter, starring that Peterson guy from CSI. It was the first adaptation of Red Dragon, and it was very well-acted (including the guy who plays Lecter, who's name I don't know). I personally thought Edward Norton was much too whiney in the remake.

I like the books too. For me, Silence of the Lambs was so well done, and the directing and acting was just so good, that the rest pale in comparison. And I liked Ed Norton in Red Dragon, though not as much as I liked him in Fight Club and Death to Smoochy.

Death to Smoochy II, anyone?

They made millions (billions?) off ewok merchandise. Stupid, but a major marketing coup.

+1 But no matter how good or bad the series is, the whole story ends with a friggin' Teddy-Bear picnic.

The Ewoks were kind of cheesy, but not as bad as the freaking Gungans. And at least VI had the same background feel and directing and editing style as IV and V. The prequels feel more like Jerry Bruckheimer (ick) than the old Spielberg or Lucas.

oceans 12

That movie was painful. After watching it I swear that I remembered enjoying Ocean's 11, but in my mind I can't separate the two.

Believe it or not, I'm ok with the Matrix sequels for the most part. They weren't great by any means and some parts were a little stupid, but they also didn't wander too far from original vision and were good entertainment (I loved the freeway fight). I think everyone was expecting a cut above the original, but given that it set the bar pretty high, on top of the fact that part of its appeal was its freshness, it would've been a miracle to match, much less beat the original.

2010 was pretty dissapointing. But it never had a chance anyway. How do you follow up an icon of a movie like 2001 and an equally iconic director in Stanley Kubrick?

However Im kinda intriqued by the idea of someone making 2061 and 3001.

I liked 2010. I sure wouldn't mind a 3001 either. 2061? I'm not so sure - I didn't care for the book as I remember...

+1 on the Ghostbusters, Batman, Smokey & the Bandit, and Star Wars series.

For most disappointing, I'd have to say Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom. After how good Raiders Of The Lost Ark was, I was sorely disappointed with this movie. At least they somewhat reedemed themselves with The Last Crusade.

The Highlander sequels. The first movie was great, the second was so bad it ruined the first.

But the worst of all time was "Return of the Jedi" The original script took place on the Wookie homeworld. I can believe Wookies could make short work of storm troopers, but no, the empire was run by idiots that couldn't beat teddy bears.
What's his face used Ewoks instead of Wookies because teddy bears would sell better than Wookie dolls. Pathetic.

John Goodman as a "Blues Brother". You had to know that it was going to suck - how could you not? King Ralph, hello? It's not so much John Goodman as that little kid that was a dead giveaway. Plus, it's kind of dishonoring Belushi's memory to create such a heinous turd of a sequel.

I'm sure people have already mentioned these, but the two Matrix sequels, for sure.

After the first movie, which I thought was a great flick, I was expecting the other two to blow me away. But oh god, they were so poorly done, boring, pretentious, and excessive. It really gave me the impression that the Wachowski brothers were lying when they said they had a trilogy in mind from the beginning; it seemed more like they were banking on the success of the first film and scrambling to come up with some sort of epic storyline to continue the cash cow. Bah....
