I live Car Lite and am trying to reduce this impact as much as possible. Does purchasing an Terra Pass (www.terrapass.com) truly offset CO2 emissions, as it claims?

Well, it's partially a matter of will it help the local ecology, in which case no, but overall most likely yes. Even if it doesn't truly BALANCE, it seems like a step in the right direction.

I'm screwed:cry: :roflmao: it wouldn't let me enter enough plane flights...My bride is a flight attendant and does about 500k miles a year:p ;) That will be coming to an end sooner or later. I currently have a road based job that has me on the road to the tune of 50k miles a year:eek: HOWEVER!!! we are working our way away from the jobs as fast as we can. Our overall lifestyle other than the travel is very low impact and geared more towards a sustainable lifestyle. I still don't exactly understand how it is supposed to work, looks a bit like how the EPA was allowing factories to buy up old junker, polluting cars in exchange for relaxed emission standards on their plants. Either you is or you ain't...pretty cut and dried in my book. IMHO it appears to be another "warm and fuzzy" like the hybrids.

There's a good reason corporations like this headquarter in Delaware.
Don't forget, they're "investing" your money, for profit. You don't get any back, because your "donation" was actually a purchase of really expensive stickers. So, they sell a grand total of three window stickers for $30-$80, keep some portion of that money, and the remainder is invested in whatever "green" project happens to be lucrative enough at the moment. The returns on this investment are pocketed by Terrapass.

wahoon, you may not be able to enter enough, but they DO have an option for 1 million miles worth of CO2. And it comes with a free folding bike!

There is a BF member down in Costa Rica who runs a commercial forest. He says he uses investors money to buy or gain control of empty farm land and plants quality timber trees for a sustainable yield. Contact him.

So not only are we paying for the products, we're paying for their clean up? Jeez, I suppose holding corporations liable for their externalities would be too heavy handed...
