Mountain Biking - Clip-on platforms for Egg Beaters?

Hi,

Considering a purchase of Egg Beaters pedals. Want to do the clipless pedal thing but also need to be able to wear ordinary shoes once in a while. I know that there are clip-in platforms for SPD pedals, and Shimano makes some combo SPD/platform pedals. But I would prefer Egg Beaters. Is this doable?

We have a billion of them at the shop. I don't know where they come from, but Iron Horse and others come with them out of the box.

maybe its just me, but i have no major issues with riding on my eggies with norm. shoes. but it might have yo do with the fact that i weigh under 120 and don"t have uber big feet...?

it seems to work, not like i'm gonna be doing any aggressive biking with reg shoes... its just for going around to the shop or something...

Just get some Egg Beater Mallets. I have a pair of them and the only problem is I had to put a shim under the cleats, because the tread on my shoe was catching on the treads of the pedal when I tried to release in hurry.

I just rode today, and realized that my affection towards Eggbeaters has gone sour. Hit the bottom side on a log, and out you come. Get new cleats, and they're perfectly tight for about a month and a half, but after that, they're far too loose.

It will be ATAC's for me, from this moment hence.

I have never seen a clip on platform that seemed worth much. I would suggest the mallet or candy pedals.

I have Shimano M424's. I dig them. I had to carve out some of the cleats on my shoes to fit other pedals, so they were ready to go for these.

alumrock, that's interesting that you can pedal on the bare pedals. I've never seen an Egg Beater in person and I just assumed that it would be too small and my feet would be constantly slipping off. I'm only 10 pounds heavier than you and a size 8 foot so maybe it would work for me, too.

I pedal on bare eggbeaters on my commuter fixed no problem. The commute is short, but its completely doable. My MTB has CB Candy pedals and thats a lot easier to pedal bare. I say go with Candy or Mallets

I have a pair of what you are talking about. But i don't use them. I was like you and thought they would be useful, so I got a pair. (don't remember where.) After about 5 seconds i realized how useless they are. The platfrom is VERY small and they are light plastic. There is absolutely no grip for a standard shoe.

Don't waste your time or your money. I know it seems like it ought to work, but trust me, they don't.

I just got the metal version of these and they seem good. Nothing like proper flays but good enough to dash down the shops and still provide pedaling ability when clipped out (which I will probably need since new to clipless).

Crank Brother Mallets work well. Big old platform, and an eggbeater in the middle. I'm just getting started with clipless on the MTB, and they are working well for me. Try www.Pricepoint.com (http://www.Pricepoint.com) , I got the Mallet M (Magnesium) for about $60.

You provide the cleats for these platforms. They will work for SPD or Egg Beaters. I've never used them.

my wife's SPDs came with cheap plastic platforms that clip in. they would bend around the pedal if you tried to climb or pedal hard, they looked like they were ready to break off any second.

+1 mallets oh or maybe you could try riding on your eggbeaters with very very firm soled shoes. at my lbs they sell a hard plastic insole for regular shoes that makes them not flex at all.
