Classic & Vintage - period correct 1970s track bike buildup - help?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
So I'm trying to build up the Sabatini as close to original as I can manage/afford.
I've already got most of the tough bits - crankset, wheels, pedals, stem + bars.
I'll try to find a NR post - the kind with the allen key - can't be bothered with the 2-nut design.
I may eventually relace the hubs to clincher rims, iff I can find nice rims.
1. Saddle? I know Unicanitors existed back then - anything else not toooo rare?
2. Clips and straps - I'd like to run double straps, as the pista pedals can accommodate them. Do older steel campy double cages exist? I'll probably use 2 pair ALE single straps, as they're the only Italian laminated strap I can find. The cheapest laminated strap as well.
3. Chain? not so important (who can tell?), but which chains were used? Regina? DID?
4. Are fluted campy Pista cranks anodized? I want to polish, but only if they're not anodized.
Thanks.
1. Brooks?
2. Probably not - just get some Toshi doubles.
3. If you wanna stick Italian, you could get the Miche track chain.
4. Not sure, but you could always strip the ano and polish them anyway. Check the DIY sticky in the SS/FG forum for more info.

nuovo record posts were the two-bolt design..
if you want only one bolt you'll need a super record or later post.
campy cranks are clear anodized excepting the very early 151bcd versions

i can never keep those straight
as to the doubles, i think the clips will be the hardest to find. thinking of going with these from SOMA (http://www.somafab.com/toeclip.html)

avoid those soma clips, they're awful, and destroy shoes.
It would be correct if you ran the second strap over the top of the clip, that's how it was done, "back in the day".

A Unicanitor plastic uncovered might be right, not too bad on ebay. The 2-bolt seatposts work much better than the 1, why the fear of using? They're easy to work with if you just raise up one side to get your 10mm in there.

MKS double straps are plain black (unlike Toshis which have logos galore) and laminated with the reinforcement layer between the suede (unlike the Soma double straps). I run them with single gate cages and they work fine.
+1 on the Miche track chain.
There are Unicantor-like 3ttt saddles out there that sometimes pop up NOS on ebay.

Campagnolo Record, Super Record or Record superleggere seat posts are not the easiest to set up, but are very adjustable. Might look for a 3ttt, the two adjustments are separate, and time frame correct, Could always look for a Brooks Swift or Swallow., much easier bolt access woth one of those saddles.
D.I.D. Chrome track chains were super cool 30 years ago, with any chain be sure to use no master link or the type with the two part closure, plate and clip. D.I.D. chains do come up on ebay, to get one expect $60. for NOS.
Be sure tire room is good for clinchers, most track bikes will have issues with room except for the smallest of tires.
Sprint to Victory.

reconsidering the seatpost - the bike actually came with a 2-bolt 27.2 post missing the cradle. It was also too big and jammed right in there. 27.0 is what I need.
also came with a DID chain - in horrible shape - bent plates galore.
lots of room for clinchers.

another vote for the black mks toe straps.... also, for chains, i am a huge fan of the high end keirin chains. the izumi and hkk chains are great. i like the screw and bolt type of master link better than the plate/clip type.

I want this thing to be as Italian as it can be. Sounds lame, but the poison is in me. And if I'd going to spend $50 on straps and $70 on a chain, they may as well be Italian.

Well Velo Orange has the ALE laminated straps (http://velo-orange.com/allatoeclst.html) for $32 but you'd better like red.

If you want to be period correct you have to get a two bolt record seatpost. If not you could use anything. I have a Nitto Jaguar NJS I am replacing with a two bolt campagnolo in 27.0 so if you are interested in the Nitto PM me, but I suspect you want to keep it period. I also have a rather rought but polishable (you won't get all the marks out but you can make it shine) Zeus 27 two bolt seatpost, it is the same as campy. If you are interested in that with no hardware I can give it to you very cheep, if you want some campy hardware with it we can work something out too. Does anyone know what year the Concor saddle came out?
Judging by the vintage, you probably actually need a 26.8 seatpost - common for that era. do you have hubs? Campy High Flange slotted 36 hole hubs are the way to go. and ahem, pm me for both.
but as for the remainder of the bike - on bars and stem, I went with new bars and stem - too much stress and importance placed on these components to trust old aluminum - you could go steel, but then it is steel and weighs a bit more. You can pick up period correct pedals on abay also and depending on condition can get them for about $35 - my last two sets were both under $40.
my bike now runs NOS torelli tubulars - which some straight guaged spokes, all shiney and new, they looks and more importantly ride great.

Thrity years ago, if you rode alloy bars and stem you were a pursuiter, If you rode mass start races with sprint finishes, you rode STEEL.
Of course this was in So Cal.

Ahhh, you haven't seen the bike.. he has wheels and a steel cinellu stem and bars (are you jealous yet)?
If the seatpost turns out to be 26.8mm PM if you interested in a super record, though it is not period correct.
No jealousy from here, my bike is it, again, that may just be the parent speaking. by the PM, I meant that I have both and they need to be somewhere else other than my storage box.

Nice chop job on the brooks, i just did one myself. did you leave flaps of leather and fasten them like a swallow? I did but I wasn't satisfied with my fastening job, I have to see how it holds up and redo it down the road. Nice bike BTW...

1978.
Thanks - I have since traded out the brooks for a black copper tabbed regal, but am using the brooks on what will be a 6-day styled bike. I did not leave the tabs as it just wasn't working out, and without good leather working tools, i just cut them off. Instead, I punch holes into the sides and laced them together using a waxed cotton shoelace.

you seem to be an expert on the subject, is there a resource or a ket to identifying models etc? I have one I believe to be older, late 70s or 80/81... I'd like to get a positive ID on it.

Expert, no -- I just know what I like. As for identifying it...you know what they say -- this thread is useless without pics.

There is a '76 Record seat post on ebay item number: 300080543479 or link: http://cgi.ebay.com/Campagnolo-Nuovo-Record-Seat-Post_W0QQitemZ300080543479QQihZ020QQcategoryZ56197QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Shameless plug
Don't know if it is correct for your track bike though?

If you have the right tool (the double bent ,campy or zeus, wrench) adjusting and setting up the nuovo record seatpost is not that bad. Fine adjustments are easier and that post locks in better than any single bolt seatpost. I love the two bolt design.
as to the seatpost, I tried out a 26.8 post and it slid in far too easily. I think I'll just get a cheapie 27.0 and ride the damn thing, and wait around for a proper record post to come my way.
Ditto on the saddle. I've got a major crush on a brown buffalo Unicanitor, but they don't grow on trees. A green Ti swift, while wrongo bongo, would do quite nicely. What with the insane prices of white perforated supercorsas, I may be able to flip the new one I've got sitting in a box.
This whole period correct thing is a bit sick. I just spied a pair of what I take to be laminated Binda straps on Ken Denny's site, and I'm a little pissed to know that I'll neverever get em.
In the end, I'd rather ride the thing, so I'll probably do what I can before the snow melts.
For those of you who don't know which bike I'm talking about, this is she:
