I saw a copy of Washington Consumer Checkbook ( a sort of local Consumer Reports type magazinee) on sale at the local newstand, and it has an article rating DC area bike shops. I don't think anyone here will be too surprised with the results. One interesting note is that some local bike store chains have very different ratings from store, leading me to infer that your bike store experience may be affected much more dramatically by the luckof the draw in which employee you encounter than in which store you choose. Prices may be another matter, but it would be hard to say how well one might do in negotiating various prices, as the prices given were all list.

The article did say that there was no one store consistently lower priced on all items, and the best prices on one bike line may be in one store and the best on another bike line elsewhere even of both stores carry the same bikes.

I don't have the results and I think I would be violating the spirit if not also the letter of copyright protection. Their site is www.checkbook.org and they apparently have local ratings in other areas too.

$10.00 to download the article?!?! What's that all about?

As I recall from my days living in Fairfax Co., the magazine can usually be found at the local public library.
