Crazy.
Stupid.
Mindless.
True, it's a nice old ballooner on the whole, but to think that someone would spend that kind of money to own a beat-up Schwinn DX that has the appalling distinction of being part of that poo-poo excuse of a family film - or for that matter, any type of film in general - disgusts me.
Heck, the bike was one of the few redeeming parts of the whole lousy picture, besides the Edsel, and that gag about having been thrown in prison for taking off a mattress tag. The rest was trash or near it.
Even the chase scenes were sorely lacking, and cheap to boot - and it doesn't take much effort to put together a chase - even a cheap one - that is reasonably entertaining.
And as for Paul what's-his-name who does PeeWee...STOP SHOUTING! Give your character some warmth and lovability to it. He comes off as an arrogant jerk, and makes no bones about it.

Pee Wee's Big Adventure was no Oscar contender by any means, but the film had more positive things to say than one particular forum member:(

Sometimes I wish I were rich and stupid. If I were, I'd buy it. I can't think of a more recognizable movie bike.

Is it just me, or does it seem odd that the seller didn't recognise this bike for what it is?

Get over it... it is an early film from a very innovative director, Tim Burton, and a very funny one at that. The film uses stop motion animation and funny in camera gags, good stuff. Also, Pee Wee's big adventure is by no means a family film and was never intended to be. His character is meant to be annoying... it's Pee Wee!! You hate to like him or like to hate him... whatever you choose.
The film is very popular among alot of age groups and for the bike to sell that much is reasonable... remember you are not buying a "bike" you are getting piece of movie memorabilia. It is the "ruby slippers" of stolen bike movies!
I'm sure the way you spend money on what you are passionate about might "disgust" someone else... so what?

The front sprocket looks pretty small, course maybe its just the giant chainguard making it look smaller than it is, or perhaps pee wee couldn't hack pedalling such a beast? (;

Context is everything. Pee Wee's Big Adventure came out in 1985, and for me at age 25 the spoofing of kids' shows and, at the same time, spoofing of the Big Chill generation's fawning over their past were just perfect. Think mid 80s, Ronald Reagan's second term, comedy was in short supply. The thought of Pee Wee singing "Tequila" in that biker bar scene still cracks me up.

Dude, that movie did, and still does, rock. I <3 Tim Burton, and I would buy that bike in a heartbeat if I had 3,500 lying around. Imagine the looks you'd get riding it around town! And for the bike collector, just try and name a more recognizable bike. Frankly, I'll be shocked if it doesn't get over $5000. That's not much money to a serious bike collector, the Schwinn family tandem sold for something like $75,000 IIRC.

I did that "I meant to do that!" gag when I fell of my bike in front of a bunch of kids this one time. They thought I was nuts but I was laughing inside. Loved the movie and I can understand why some people would want the bike, it was my second favourite character in the movie ;)

That in itself is better then most gags in the movie (save for the Texas Telephone joke).

Right on.
Pee Wee's Big Adventure is a classic. I'd be wary of any person that was not receptive to the humor in that film.
