Hi forum goers, could I ask a question ? I have 9 speed Centaur ergos, a 9 speed Ultegra cassette and a Dura Ace rear mech - model RD-7402(8 speed I think), Will I have to route the cable in a certain way to get the shift correct?

Please don't tell me it can't be done ;)

If it will work, is it better to run 10 or 11 tooth jockey wheels on the rear mech?

Cheers

No problem, it can be done with one of these: www.jtekengineering.com/shiftmate.htm (http://www.jtekengineering.com/shiftmate.htm)
I presume they'll ship to the UK :)

There is no Shiftmate for what he wants. Shimano Durace 8 speed had an oddball pull length. If you look closely they don't mention Durace 8.

The answer is NO. Get Shimano 9 or 10 speed rear and it will work. Better still, buy a Campy rear, they are on sale now. 2006 parts are being blown out. Good luck.

I also think someone manufactures a cassette that will fit Shimano but is spaced for Campy. But if I remember correctly they were quite pricey. Probably cheaper to go the derailleur-shiftmate route rather than derailleur-special cassette.

The combination of a Shimano 9-speed rear derailleur and a JTek Shiftmate will probably be your quickest and cheapest solution. Alternatively you could use a Shimano 9-speed derailleur and a custom cassette built by Wheels Manufacturing or American Classic. Using a Campy rear derailleur with a Shimano shifter would NOT be good because of the difference in cable pull and throw ratios, similar problem with the 8-speed Dura-Ace rear derailleur.
