Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Today's NYT Magazine has an article of interest for those with an opinion about SUV drivers.
"Whos the Jerk Now, Jerk"
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/02/11/magazine/11funnyhumor.t.html
I read this article twice. I'm still confused. Wasn't this a kind of hit-and-run? So what if he had an opinion about SUVs? Shouldn't he report the incident?
Anyway, I don't have a particular opinion about SUVs, except that I never could figure out what the advantage of owning one was... except maybe to be in something a little bigger and safer than the rest (although that has been proven false.)
Anyway, I'm still confused about why iPods are such a great deal... so maybe I'm just a curmudgeon. :)

If the guy wasn't so worried about hating people because of their vehicle choice, he might have done a nice deed.
Jon Glaser is a former writer for “Late Night With Conan O’Brien.”Well, this piece explains the "former" part.

Yes, it does.
The way the article is written it says more about the author than the driver of the SUV.

I only recently discovered a big advantage of an mp3 player/ipod over CD/mp3 players. The ability to hold humongusly long mp3 files where entire audio books are on one single file and bookmark the place for returning later. I'm starting a book Public Enemies by Bryan Burrough tomorrow that is over 600 megs long, all on one file. My CD player that plays mp3 does not have a bookmark feature, essential for a 26 hour long spoken book; my mp3 player does.

The public library where I work has started carrying audiobooks in Playaway (http://www.playawaydigital.com/) format. Playaway is an iPod-like device with the audiobook pre-recorded on it. Bookmarks, fast-forward, rewind, skip to chapter, the works. The most interesting feature is you can speed up the narration without changing the pitch or adversely effecting the understandability.
Anyway, when we were testing Playaways to determine whether or not to go with them, that's when I too discovered the advantages of dedicated mp3 players over my mp3-capable diskman. And it's much more convenient than carrying around a tape or CD-based audiobook.

Yep, especially in the winter. Changing CDs when it is zero degrees F is a real pain. Can't do it without removing mittens. Now I just burn CD Audio books from the libraryto mp3 format for loading later on to the mp3 player. That, and I also have access to Net Library for free downloading of Audio Books off the Internet. I convert the time restricted licensed WMA format into unrestricted mp3 format for later listening when I'm ready for them.

I guess that's a good reason. My wife has one and uses it for walking, gym and so on, but I dislike using earphones will I'm walking or biking. I do like to listen to MP3 music on my computer. BTW, thanks for the recommendation of "The Looming Tower" by Lawrence Wright on another thread. It's a good read.
Back on thread topic: one thing that does annoy me about quite a few SUV drivers are their aggressiveness, especially if there's ice and snow on the ground (like today...). Always seems to be a few of them in the ditch too. I think it might have something to do with being so high off the ground, they probably don't have much "road feel". You'd need an old Fiat 500 for that...
