Bicycle Mechanics - Front Derailleur - chain hanging up?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

My wife complained that her bike is giving her shifting problems. I put it on the stand. When I try to shift into the large chainring in front, the chain jams between the big ring and the derailleur cage. If I push hard it shifts, but it certainly isn't smooth. I haven't ridden it to see what it's like on the road, but it shouldn't be doing this on the stand, I don't think. I cleaned and oiled her chain to make sure it wasn't binding. I don't want to mess with the front derailleur - like changing the height or the rotation around the seat tube - until I know what I'm doing.
Is there a usual cause for this that I'm not aware of?
It's an old, rigid Specialized Rockhopper.
Sounds like you might need more cable tension. Click here (http://www.parktool.com/repair/readhowto.asp?id=75)to learn how and other derailleur adjustments.

Rigid Rockhopper? Must be at least ten years old? Look close at the inner plate of the der. It probably has a groove worn in it from the chain rubbing and when you try to shift up it hangs on this groove. They also do this when the pivots get worn and the der. wants to twist rather than push the chain over.
