Worry about other things before you get a new bike.

For $350 you won't get a good full suspension bike, so forget that. You can come up with a decent used hardtail. Which one is hard to say. At that price they are somewhat of a dime a dozen.

for $350 they are all gonna be about the same as far as parts and quality, so test ride as many as you can and go with the one that feels the best. for $350 used i'd think the parts and quality would all be roughly the same as you still get what you pay for. you could try to find a used bike store around your area or try ebay.com or craigslist.org. i'd try to shy away from buying online unless you really know what you're looking for. new you should be able to get a good all around hardtail like a Specialized Hardrock, Trek 4300, other good brands in that range are Iron Horse, Diamond Back, Schwinn (not dept. store Schwinn), and perhaps a Kona.

As mentioned, if your house burnt down, you have other things to worry about. For $350, you probably won't find a decent FS, but a decent used hardtail or even rigid bike is possible. Good luck!

Here's a list of the FS bikes on ebay (new and used) with a buy it now price of $350 or less

http://listings.ebay.com/_W0QQa30300Z30475QQalistZa30300QQcatrefZC6QQcoactionZcompareQQcoentrypageZsearchQQcopagenumZ1QQfasiZ 1QQfclZ3QQfgtpZQQfromZR2QQfsooZ2QQfsopZ2QQftrtZ1QQftrvZ1QQgcsZ1517QQpfidZ1847QQpfmodeZ2QQpriceZ1QQre qtypeZ2QQsacatZQ2d100QQsaprchiZ350QQsaprcloZ0QQsascsZ2QQsatitleZQQsbrbinZtQQsocmdZListingItemList

now those might be some people's style, but I would prefer a $350 hardtail. here's the search results on $350 or less hardtails

http://listings.ebay.com/_W0QQsocmdZListingItemList?pfid=1847&gcs=1517&sacat=-100&reqtype=2&catref=C6&fsop=2&fsoo=2&copagenum=1&from=R2&sbrbin=t&coaction=compare&socmd=ListingItemList&saprclo=0&sascs=2&coentrypage=search&saprchi=350&ftrv=1&fasi=1&ftrt=1&fcl=3&price=1&pagetype=2&socdpfcat=-100&pfmode=2&a30300=30474&alist=a30300

I like those results a lot better

Blue sucks. Almost as much as Specialized.

Almost?

What if one had a blue Specialized? Would the sucking cancel each other out or would it be cumulative?

It would put an end to the world due to it's high level of the suck.

It would put an end to the world due to it's high level of the suck.. . . creating a 'blue hole' in the universe that would act like a super-vortex.

That bike, of ultimate suckitude, would excrete a moist, runny, nasty, clueless, and utterly confused child after being taken on its first, real, mountain bike ride.

That noxious excretion would call itself "wheelhot."

Daaaang! You so hateful.

I blame its parents for the current situation.

An Oedipus thing, over protection, neglect or just plain bad parenting?

Bad genes most likely.
