Classic & Vintage - Got this Peugeot today….what model is it???

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I picked up this Peugeot today. It’s in excellent condition, and appears to be all stock except for the horrible seat. It’s got the cool Cibie generator with front and rear lights, and a nice rack for beer runs. I know it’s an entry level Peugeot for the day, but I couldn’t pass it up!! Anybody know the model on this bike? I’m really more of a Schwinn Cruiser, and Mt Bike guy. BTW, I rode it around the block, rides pretty well. Cant wait to try it after dark!!!! Cheers!!

I believe you have a UE-8 Caravan in it's final incarnation, The "Carbolite 103" decal dates it to 1979 or later,(I think) but this bike does not show up in the 1982 Catalog. Those decals were used right up through the mid 80's.
Neat Bike!
P.S. I could be wrong on any of this....
Thanks that helped a lot! By searching “UE-8” and "Caravan" in Google I finally found some similar bikes!!
It definitely appears to be a UE-8. I was having a hard time finding other Peugeots with the primary sticker on the top tube. It appears they just did that in 1982-83. I read one post that states the first 3 in the serial # indicates 1983 which is inline with the Peugeot sticker on the top tube. So I am concluding it’s a 1983 UE-8 Caravan. Any thoughts on value, cause this bike just isn’t my speed.

Value, no Idea, If I had to guess I'd say $50, but, I'm a Peugeot nut, and I'm also pretty cheap. so it could vary some either way.

Get a proper saddle on that bike and then put it on Portland CL. With the rack, fenders and lights you should get $100+. I know you would in the Bay Area, especially in that size.

I sold this one last year for $40 as pictured needing a complete redo to the first guy that saw it. Not too many of those rack/fender/ light sets floating around in good shape.
It would be a sin to strip this bike for fixie conversion, it's basically the 'Amsterdam' model. Someone will want it for what it is and I would think $100 would be on the lower end of it's value in Portland.

+ 1 on that.
Does anyone know the difference between Carbolite 103 and, say, early 1970s UO-8 frame tubing?
I concur that it should be left intact, since it is a rare (in the U.S.) model with an almost complement of OEM components.
Besides, why set bicycle technology back 50 years by converting anything to fixed gear? :)
You read my mind!!! Its a great bike for someone, but not me. I just posted it on CL for $200. Maybe that is too much...........but like you said it should sell well here in Portland!! I am going to take it out in about 10 minutes and see how well the lighting system works. I'll let ya know!!

Well, that should keep the fixie strippers at bay. :)
I just went for a quick ride. Solid bike, responsive, and quicker that I expected. I was also curious about that seat. I adjusted it a few ways, but it's terribly uncomfortable no matter how I positioned the thing. As for the lighting system, it was a no show. It needs tinkering.
I am guessing I will have the price down to $100 in 2-3 days, and it will be stripped and "fixed" in a week.

Kills me to think of a Caravan being ruined like that.
When you sell it, find out what the buyer is going to do with the Bike, If it's one of those SS/FG...people,
offer to knock off $10 and keep all the Caravan specific Kit. Then offer it up to one of the Peugeot Faithful here on the C&V.
Those parts are hard to find, and somewhere, someone is returning a UE-8 Caravan to it's former glory.

A better idea would be to strip off the fenders/rack, put a decent seat on it, and list it for $120. You'll sell the bike almost guaranteed, and still have the Caravan kit to sell/barter.

I'd argue for keeping it complete, at a higher price, and finding somebody in PDX who wants an original Caravan. Can't be too hard to find, as randya said.

Somewhere, someone hell; I'm right here. I've got a 1969 Caravelle waiting on fenders, lights and rack.

Yeah if whoever buys it doesn't want the fenders/lights - send 'em to me. That fender mounted headlight is cool.
