Thinking of buying a used 2002 Trek 400 Navigator hybrid with a shimano 7speed internal rear hub.

But I cannot tell for sure from the owner's description if it has horizontal rear dropouts. I would hate to have to use a tensioner.

Anyone own or seen one of these? Are they horizontal?

thanks,

jim

I'm no Trek expert, but I would be surprised to see any hybrid that new to have horizontal dropouts.

Didn't Shimano used to say that their internally geared hubs had to be mounted on horizontal drops? Assuming that this bike has its original equipment, wouldn't that mean it should be horizontal?

I ask because I also assumed that no newish bike like that would be horizontal

They should be Semi-Horizontals, which work but are different then track ends or BMX drop outs.

If it were a derailleur bike, no question it would have vertical dropouts. However, this one has an internally geared hub so.......

could be a kludge. but the obvious anwer seems to be "ask the seller."

Well, a bigger fool than me bought it out from under me, so no worries.

This was one of those cases where I had buyer's remorse the moment I made an offer. In this case the consumer gods heeded my prayers.

Although it would have been fun to learn about internally geared hubs. Been wanting to see what kind of magic went on in those things.

thanks all,

jim

I looked into putting a Nexus hub on a Cannondale hybrid a few years ago and learned that there would have been multiple issues presented by the vertical dropouts on the bike. It's currently a singlespeed with a tensioner.
