Mountain - Plains - RTD + Fenders = ???

I took my bike on the bus for the first time last week and was rather impressed with the simplicity and flexibility of RTD's racks. I am now looking to install full fenders on my bike, however, so I'm worried about front fender interference with the support arm. Has anyone here taken a bike with fenders on a bus before?

Just about every day. They recommend you put the arm under the fender. Another poster here did the opposite and the driver had to pull over to allow him to fix it. I mounted my front fender a tad higher to allow for the clearance. Plus, both SKS and freddies bend fairly well.
Oh and when you first put it on the bus do not freak out that the bike is wobbling as the bus hits bumps. It's supposed to do that to a degree. I've had my bike on the bus 100s of times with no issues. Now that I have cursed myself I am going to find some wood to knock on. :p

I put the arm OVER my fenders. I only have about a half inch clearance, and the arm presses the fender down tightly onto the front tire. The bike has logged several hundred miles on the bus since I put the fenders on and never had a problem.

I think the biggest factors are clearance and flexibility. There's no way I could get the arm under my fender without ripping it off.

Well....if you look at their instructions you just provided them an out if your bike exits the carrier in an untimely fashion. :p
Though I suspect they have other methods of not paying for a bike.
I think my fenders have about a 3/4" clearance or less. SKS fenders bend quite well.

Ah, good to know! Where, though, has RTD made a mention of fenders? I can't find it on their website.

BTW, (either of you) please feel free to offer fender selection and/or installation advice, ...especially in regard to choosing between Freddy and SKS! :)

I use Freddy Fenders Hard Core on both my bikes. No experience with the SKS fenders, but the only problem I have with the Freddy's are clearance issues in the snow, and that's a frame issue, not a fender issue.

I do not remember where I found those instructions. The type of rack used on RTD's buses is fairly common and the same instructions exist elsewhere with the same mention of fenders. I used Freddie Fenders on my old hybrid and now use SKS on my touring bike. Both worked fine. The only difference is that my freddie fenders came with a mudguard while the SKS did not. The SKS fenders look a tad nicer IMHO. Either are a good choice.
