General Cycling Discussion - what do you think aboout when riding?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

One of the things I love about biking is that I get to work out my mind, while working out my body. Sometime I sort of zone out and just ride without thinking- which is quite meditative. But most of the time, particularly in the evening I get very creative and inspired ideas. I might have an idea for a painting, or a building I am working on. Sometimes I just feel very at peace, like everything is coming together just right. And believe me, I tend to worry and get quite anxious much of the time, so having that type of clarity is realy quite special. It is much of the reason why I ride and why I look forward to hoping on my bike. Personaly, no other form of exercise I have tried has given me this type of satisfaction.
Of course, sometimes, particularly when on a steep hill, I just am holding on and thinking "Your butt is getting smaller, good girl, yes- your butt is getting smaller". This is my mantra for getting up tought hills! Forget creativity at that point.
Please tell me what you think about and how you feel when riding!

I don't have time to think. The ride is too rough...I have to empty my mind and flow with the trail :) And if I am on my way to the trail...I am thinking of going there as fast as possible because I am bored :)

Given where I live, I tend to think about how rude vehicle-drivers are in this community. However, I found a unique solution . . . if anybody drives up behind me and honks at me to get out of the way (which usually happens on left-turn only lanes), I just moon them, right when the light turns green. It's not exactly a nice thing to do, I know, but considering the circumstance, I think it's the only thing that registers with these prejudiced idiots.
Damn, I'm good!

Hey, Valencia! Being a coaster enthusiast/obsessor, I'm quite aware that Six Flags Magic Mountain's there. So, you been there at all? Ridden X and/or Goliath? (BTW, Titan, based on Goliath is my favorite, though it's longer than Goliath, it's still a must-ride.)

Not damaging my wheelset at 35kph...
I sometimes think about interesting and clever threads to start here at Bike Forums. I've thought of some good ones, but somehow I never get around to actually doing it.
There was a fairly lengthy thread about just this thing a while back.

A lot of the time Im cursing the wind, hahaha. Most of the time though I just really dont think of anything. I dont like to think about school, work, anything. When Im on the bike, or running, or whatever exercise Im doing thats all Im focused on. My mantra for riding is 'smooth and steady...smooth and steady'. I also like when I pop up into the big chainring, something just clicks mentally, I feel like a pro, riding a time trial or something. Then I go back into the middle ring and, never being able to get back up into the big one, remember the good times I had in the big ring! hahaha

Well, around here I think about how beautiful this part of the country is and how nice it would be to have someone to ride with...at least I think it would be nice.
And how I should get out and ride more...but work just gets in the way! Anyone want to buy a thriving business so I can get out more?
I try to think about music, seeing as how I cant listen to music while riding. Its kinda hard though, with how noisy it is.

I think about Jesus a lot. Sometimes I'll have a song in my head and it plays over and over. I think about my friends, and wonder what they're doing at that time. Sometimes I think about how sore my rear end is, so then I just get out of the saddle for a couple miles. A lot of times I can see the mountain tops from the top of another mountain as I ride, and I'm just in awe of the beauty.

This happens to me almost accidentally when I'm climbing a tall hill. I often get two or three good thread titles (I need to make an effort to write those down!)
I think it's something to do with the increased blood supply to the brain or something like that...

Sometimes my mind will wonder, but generally I'm thinking about my pedal stroke, positiong on the bike, analysing a past race, or planning for an upcoming one.

Interesting responses so far...I suppose I should clairfy that of course when I am riding on streets in traffic and so fourth I am too busy thinking of getting home without being killed. But fortunatly I live 4 minutes away froma great trail that can be extremely peaceful- it is usually on this part of the ride that I get inspired. I ride this for about 1.5 hrs a day and the other part is rural roads west of Boston. I don't worry about cars so much because there aren't too many at least when I ride.
And it is not that I am riding and trying to think, more like I am just rding and thoughts come to me- soemtimes not even verbally but images too.
It's cool because whenever I try to think up ideas nothing comes out, but when I'm not even trying..there they are!

Not necesserly, if you eat more than you waste, your muscle weight will increase, therefore the rear "place" will actually get bigger!
Cars, glass, the route, and the pace in that order.

hmmmm...
I think about going faster, pedling smoother, not getting run over, not hitting a tree, how funny the fat guy on that bike beside me looks, oh crap, thats my reflection.
