I have a full 8 speed setup that I'm trying to get another year out of. Problem is I wrecked my bike a few weeks ago and totally destroyed my record 8 speed FD. I've looked at the LBS for something used but no such luck. I did find a centuar 9/10 speed FD for 38.88 online which is a pretty good price but not if its not gonna work. Is there any reason why it wouldn't work with an 8 speed group? If so, any suggestions for a replacement?

Thanks
Chris

If it is a front derailleur my feeling is that it should be a fine replacement. That is as long as it doesn't work for some reason I have not thought of.

It will work. It may be that the cage is slightly narrower due to 9/10 sp chain being narrower, but I doubt that it will matter.

I used a 10 speed Chorus front derailleur with a Shimano 600 [double] 7 speed biopace chainrings, 8 speed Shimano cassette, and 8 speed 600 brifters, 7/8 speed chain. It's all good.

You may want to attend the annual swap meet at Sand Point NAS(magnusonPark) this Sunday 2/18, lots of good used stuff available at low prices. Believe it is from 9 AM to 2 Pm & I think, costs $5 to get in at beginning but later drops to $3 & the prices get better on the stuff that's left after the first 2 or 3 hours. If you don't take to much $$ along, you may get home without another bike :) Don

What kind of shifters do you have? I have a 8 speed C-Record gruppo that I had to replace the FD. I went with a 10 spd Record from 2002. The 8 spd shifters I have are Ergo and Mirage. They work very well. The chain difference requires you to tweek the FD position a little more when you shift across a wide range but, as soon as you get used to it there is no problem because you just do it. That is the nice thing about the left ergo shifter is that it has a lot of clicks. I say no problem
