General Cycling Discussion - Beautiful Weather for a Ride

Missouri is the place to be lately if you enjoy severe thunderstorms and tornados. I think we've had over 200 tornados in the past week or so. With that in mind, I set out on my Saturday morning ride today figuring to limit myself to 20 miles because the skies did not look so attractive. At about mile 12 a light rain began, then the tornado sirens went off. The downpour started when I was a couple miles from home. After riding about half a mile in that, I ducked into a strip mall and took cover outside a Starbucks (yes, they are everywhere). A few minutes later I was on my way again--the severe storms missed my area. This was the first time I've ridden in rain any harder than a light drizzle. I had a great ride. I hope folks in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Missouri are all weathering the storms.

I was going for a century last week, and got caught in a HUGE thunderstorm around mile 50. I rode 20 more miles before I could find shelter anywhere (I live and train in the countryside), but despite the thunder and lightening I enjoyed it. The downpour cooled me off, and I could really see natures beauty as I rode into the storm and I could see it from a distance. I ended up having to bail out and call someone to come get me because the storm just continued. But on Thursday I went out with a century on my mind again, and the beautiful weather allowed me to ride 104 miles.

For me biking in the rain is a pain - I wear glasses. There's nothing worse than not being able to see with your glasses on ... or off.

Wear and helmet with a visor and wipe quick :)

Snowing - 6-12 inches in the Denver metro area, 32 degrees F, terribly wet and sluishy.

Chain laws in the mtns with the northern mtns 12-20 inches.

Think I will stay inside!!

Around here, we get major news when there is even a tornado warning.

The other day I was walking home from the bus stop and ducked into a nearby school entrance for cover as the hail started.

I looked apprehensively at the flagpole about 30 feet from me..

Those tornados are pretty terrible, I am glad I don't live in that region!

I wonder about what happens if you're out on a ride and a tornado happens, you're out in the middle of nowhere, what do you do?

They told us in school that if you're stuck and you see a tornado, find a ditch and flatten yourself inside it until the storm passes.

Hopefully you won't be so foolish as to go riding in tornado weather to begin with.

It's crazy weather right now in Chicago. The winds are 40 miles per hour. Stupid me, I went for the ride anyway, and it was a big b!tch getting to my halfway point, and coming back, the wind seemed to pick up even more. I had another hour to go before this HUGE wind came and slammed me off the bike path, and I went over into the grass as I was climbing up a small incline. The ride ended right there, so I missed out on my third hour of my ride. As I got up, I saw a group of 5 police on their bikes shielding a women with her baby in a stroller until the winds died down. Once the winds stopped, the woman quickly took off with the baby. Why the heck is she out in this crazy weather with a baby? :confused:

Feel free to send some thunderstorms this way if you like, we still need the rain!!! However, we have been very lucky in that we've just had an early onset of 'winter' over here. Today's temperature range: 14-23 degrees C. Can anyone ask for better riding conditions?

After snow yesterday, great weather for a ride today in low 60's F. in Denver.

Sure, we can send over the thunderstorms, but you'll have to take the funnel clouds and 40- 60 mile per hour winds that come with it.

How does that sound?

I was riding in bigger winds than that when that cyclone was off the coast back in February of this year. Please, send 'em over! :D

Nope - even though we had 5 inches, it was all melted by yesterday PM, and everything was perfectly dry today and had a wonderful ride.

Very typically Colorado.

(Yup, my Mom and Dad in Estes Park got that snow, too. :) They love it!)

Snow can disappear like it never happened. Mom and Dad can get a good snowing, then have it melt the next day with temps at 70.
