View Full Version : Tufo Clincher Tubulars - Survey - Have you had any issues?

Has anyone had any issues with rolling the Tufo Clincher Tublars? I rolled one in a cyclocross race and now I cannot get this out of my mind on whether I should stick with this brand and model. I would appreciate anyone's thoughts and opinions.

Durability and traction are fine. I just want confidence in the off cambers not worrying about rolling a tire off the rim?

Yes, everyone in my area (myself included) has rolled those tires at various pressures in races. My shop no longer sells them.

Seems a common theme with the Tufo. Saw three of them do it at race this season.

One thing I'll say is that they are pretty good tires for a second wheelset. Say for instance that you have a set of tubular race wheels, and a set of clinchers for practice and backup wheels. IMO, it's hard to ride clinchers once you've ridden tubulars alot, so this is the next best thing. If you just use them for practices and pit wheels, then well you don't have to worry so much about them coming off in races. The only thing I would not recommend them for is for your primary race wheels.

had mine roll on me on a off-camber, was able to pop it back on but lost a position. I figured I was running it with too low pressure but after reading this thread, I'm re-considering using these next season. Might just push me into building up a tubular wheel set.

They are pretty durable. Thats the one plus of these tires. One flat in two season due to a thorn, and it was sealable later on that evening with some Stans.

The tires have onyl unbeaded in my experience. So, a trip back to the pit to defplate the tire, rebead, and re inflate. LAME!

A very nice friend let me race his set of Tufo tubulars this season. The feel between the two is night and day. The tubular clinchers feel like rocks comapred to a tufo tubular. I'm now sold on the tufo tubular.

If you can't afford to buy tubualr tires, go out and ride you clinchers at 40 psi over baby head rocks for hours to develop your "grace".

Tufo Tubular Clincher are not worth the money.

im glad i decided to do my search about these tubular clinchers. i was just about to press the "Buy it now" on a set but im really glad you guys posted this thread. thanks guys for all the great info. i will now save every penny and just go full tubular . now to start research on the wheels will be fun !!!

have the rolling issues just been at low pressure? so on a road bike where you typically run much higher pressures, do you think the (road) tires woudl be OK? Anyone have any experiences to share there? I was thinking about using these for both cross and on my TT bike. I'll definitely skip the cross tires after reading this thread, but am curious if the same thing applies to high-pressure road situaions.

I've not heard of the road version rolling. The pressure is the primary difference I feel.

I ran a Tufo on my back wheel last season (front one's sidewall got slashed), and never had any problems with it rolling. I now have a pair of CS3 lites on my roadie, and like the way they feel- they even made my CrossCheck feel zippy. I could not properly seat the CS3's until I had removed the rim strip from the wheel- seems like you have to do that. I doubt I'll run the Tufo cross tires next season, but they worked for me well enough. No complaints with Michelin Mud 2's and Slime tubes
