Foo - Fashion Tips for Nerds

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Top 10 Fashion Suggestions for Nerds
While creating Fashion4Nerds.com, we interviewed over 30 young women between the ages of 18 and 32 about their likes and dislikes when it comes to guys' fashion. We even asked them to give special attention to why they consider us Nerds unfashionable.
Here are their Top 10 responses, ordered by frequency of occurrence. Some tips may surprise you - they surprised us!
10. Always wear a belt
Pants have belt-loops for a reason. Use them. You can't go wrong with black or brown, but stay away from large, fancy buckles...
9. White socks are only worn during athletic activities
Gleaming, bright-white socks, worn beneath jet-black dress shoes. Even we have to admit that's pretty ugly...
8. Make sure nails are trimmed and clean
Who knew - women pay attention to a guy's finger nails...
7. No facial hair
Long story short, to be on the safe side, ditch the facial hair. Yes, some men can pull it off, you probably aren't one of them...
6. Pants - no pleats or tapered legs
You're not a rock star, so no tapered or tight-legged jeans...
5. If it has a hole, tear or discoloration throw it out
Doesn't matter how tiny the hole is - get rid of worn out clothing immediately...
4. Running shoes are for the gym ONLY
Simple rule: No running, no running shoes. Period.
3. Do NOT wear free or company t-shirts
Free t-shirts are great, but don't wear them anywhere you actually hope to talk to girls...
2. Do NOT tuck in your shirt (unless at a formal event)
You may think tucking in your shirt looks 'neater', but women disagree. There are a few exceptions...
And the number one suggestion/complaint of women everywhere:
1. Never wear socks with sandals
There are few things women hate more than this footwear choice. Ask any woman you can find - to them, wearing socks with sandals is an extremely heinous act...

I don't do any of these....really, honestly I don't. Ok.....maybe a few....just one or two though.
Alright....alright I'm guilty of ALL of them regularly (except #1).

kind of harsh.. I dont know, I do enjoy seing a men in jeans that has some holes in them, that can be sexy, belt? not always.. dont need a belt in jeans..
companie tshirt, yeah i agree with that one.
i could add when wearing shorts, dont wear socks, or long white socks.
I love the clean shaved look too but some guy can pull off facial hairs or even look better with them, unless it's a single mustache.
3. Do NOT wear free or company t-shirts
Uh oh. I wear free (company logo) t-shirts all the time. :o
1. Never wear socks with sandals
+1
I'll add one of my own.
Always wear socks with loafer, docksiders, etc.
The style of not wearing socks with shoes went out in the late 80s. :p

Belt is necessary most of the time, but not all the time.
White socks can also be worn around - dress socks look stupid when you're walking around campus in white sneakers.
Running shoes - what's the problem? I wear mine all the time, and so do most of the people I know who own them. They look fine.
Rainbow-colored toe socks can successfully be worn with sandals.
Okay can I just add something here.
At the gym I see this and it bothers me. BLACK SOCKS WITH WHITE SHOES!!! BIG NO-NO!!
I'm a big fan of the Adidas no-show black sock. I'm not sure if its a fashion faux-pas or not

Those socks are fine, I'm talking about socks that are mid-length or knee high. It just looks weird to me??
... some guy can pull off facial hairs ....
That's gotta hurt.

Yeah, definitely - I wear ankles or no-shows, unless I've got pants on, then I'll rock the calf length ones.

Actually it said "no pleats or tapered legs" and I'm guilty of the pleats part. Nearly every pair of pants I wear are pleated.
I've only just recently (last weekend) found that pleated pants may be the reason all my pants look like the legs sections are 3x too big for my legs. Pleated pants automatically mean wider leg sections, and I have pretty thin legs for such a large frame.

Amazing how different areas bring different ideas. No one is caught dead without a belt here, its thought of as...well...not straight.
Pleats for a man with large legs makes him (or even her) look even more monstrous. I freaking hate pleats. If you are skinny with a tiny butt, please go to town on the pleats. Tapered legs is just so 80s. Everytime I see a set I want to start headbanging and start slam dancing. Either that or find the set of dirty dancing.

I'm beginning to realize that. I liked it originally because it felt more comfortable.....but now I realize it makes me look even bigger.
Worse part is that I don't have big meaty legs like somebody with my waist line might normally have. All the pants for my waist expect big meaty legs and have big wide leg sections. I could fold the leg sections in half for my legs on most pants. :(

Try the opposite. At 6'5 270 I am not in horrendous shape. But when I go buuy an xl or an xxl anything they are short. I have only even found one shirt that fits the length of my arms and a few shirts that match my shoulders. most are short (arms and body) and don't even touch the tips of my shoulders. Like everyone who wear xxl or xl should be short and have a giant beer gut.
I am not even going to talk about the fun I have buying pants or shorts. Back from my power lifting days my legs hang out around 26inches. and my calves are close to 19inches. I don't exactly fit standard pants either haha (and if I buy pants to fit the legs, they are always 3 sizes (6inches) to big for my waist)

If I replaced every item of clothing I had once it got a hole in it, I'd be broke pretty quick. I don't know why, but I'm rough on clothes. Holes are the norm.
And I've never really understood the aversion to socks + sandals. I don't do it as I hardly ever wear sandals outside of the home to begin with, but I dont see it as any dumber looking than the myriad of stupid things people do and wear every day.
Anyway, this article conveniently fails to mention what color sock I should be wearing on my peener. Typical bull****.

One thing to notice is that these are supposed to be general guidelines for nerds with NO fashion sense. Its like... follow these rules if you dont know where to start. I agree with all of them, on a general basis.
Whats funny, is I was just making lunch and saw a skinny guy in pleats and though.. "that looks ridiculous".. then I saw this thread. lol.

As the youngest kid in the fam, I always got the hand-me-downs and thrift store bargains. I am no stranger to pleated pants, or long-legged diapers, or whatever they're called.
EDIT: Pleated pants + tucked in shirt (Oversized, of course. Thanks Mom!) = FRONT BUTT!

I'm not a nerd.
I roll my own smoke.
I drink stout.
I have a beard.
I have scars.
I hate computers.
I hunt my own meat.
I can fistfight.
I can satisfy a woman.

That said, there are some gentleman around here who I really WISH would tuck their shirts in, to prevent said (large) guts from hanging out.

[QUOTE=Jet Travis]Ladies, Gentlemen, agree or disagree?
10. Always wear a belt
99% of the time I wear jeans. I very seldom wear a belt. Unless it's those wonderful times when I've lost 5 pounds and have to for them to stay up.
9. White socks are only worn during athletic activities
I agree, except for the "no-see" socks. I do wear them sometimes.
8. Make sure nails are trimmed and clean
OK. I'm a stickler for this one. Almost obsessive.
7. No facial hair
No worries. Most 12 year old boys can grow more facial hair than me.
6. Pants - no pleats or tapered legs
Oops. I have to clean out all of my dress pants.
5. If it has a hole, tear or discoloration throw it out
No. Jeans aren't right until they have a few little holes here and there.
4. Running shoes are for the gym ONLY
Besides cycling shoes I wasn't aware there were other types of shoes? And I'm not wearing my cleats everywhere.
3. Do NOT wear free or company t-shirts
If this carries over to bike ride t-shirts I would have a pretty empty closet.
2. Do NOT tuck in your shirt (unless at a formal event)
Good here. I only tuck dress shirts.
And the number one suggestion/complaint of women everywhere:
1. Never wear socks with sandals
No problem. Wouldn't be caught dead with socks and sandals.
Not that any of this matters to me. I like how I dress and my wife is happy with it too. Anyone else can just..........well...............you know.

Now wait one Dang minute here! Sometimes it gets cold down here in the tropics and I actually have to think about putting socks on with my sandals!
I was a nerd, but if you get to move down to Costa Rica and own 400+ acres of reforestation - well, you aren't a nerd anymore.
You are excentric!

While most of the things they say to avoid are pretty reasonable, their can't go wrong suggestions are pretty mundane and boring. Not bad advice if all you want to do is blend in and not attract any attention.
I have these too in white Im a big fan of those too on woman and men
I loves my footies in the summer... or cuffed crews.

re: tucking in your shirt. Don't tuck in tee-shirts, but dress shirts are a must. It makes you look slimmer, too. The guideline is: if the hem of the shirt is below your butt, tuck it in.
And re: belts: black belt, black shoes. Brown belt, brown shoes. and NEVER belt and suspenders.

Black low cut shoes, white socks, tan pants, cowboy shirt, green and black reversabel vest, teal jacket almost every day where I teach at school.
Stupid fashion nazis anyway. :)
The kids at school tell me to get a fashion sense. :)

That's nothing. I knew a kid in high school who had a full on peach fuzz beard. It was hilarious.
