Southern California - Cheap powder coating

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Someone said he found a place that can powdercoat his bike for $75.00 (or was it some other subforum?).
Or does anyone know a cheap powdercoating place?
I am re-painting my mountain bike.

Not here that I've seen. I checked with a place in Anahiem near Lincoln and Euclid but they don't do small jobs. I've got a set of cranks that need to be coated or painted. I was thinking of getting them anodized, but that seems rather expensive for an old set of Sugino cranks.

Just give them a call and compare prices.
I got my fixie powdercoated at Olympic Powdercoating (http://www.olympicpowdercoating.com/) for somewhere around $75... frame and forks. I'd highly recommend them. You can see pics of the bike on Velospace, linked in my SIG below.

Thanks Tim.
Do you have any closeups of how the lugs came out? There was some discussion of this on the Classics & Vintage Forum about powdercoating sometimes being too thick and not looking right on lugged frames. That's actually not a problem for my cranks, or if I end up getting my Cannondale done, but I'd be curious to see some detailed pics.

I have hook ups on that type of stuff, basic colors though, and local. Most powdercoat should be .012" thick unles it has a wrinkle to it, but most high gloss stuff is super thin. I can have things painted as well, again solid colors.

No, no closeups. BUT! The powdercoating is thick and it looks it around the lugs. I wouldn't powdercoat a vintage frame if I were going for a restoration.

liquid coats are better for lug details, powder is great for beating around like for a MTB frame or standard roadie setup. Light scratches can be buffed out with your finger.

Thanks Jsigone
Have you tried a paint and body shop? If there's one close by, take the frame over there and get an estimate.

Performance has an FSA compact crank and BB on sale so I may get that instead of coating my current one, then I could take the Cannondale roadie in for powdercoating. Since there's no lugs, there shouldn't be a problem. For a true vintage lugged frame I'd probably send it off to Dr. Deltron (I think that's his username) from the C&V forum as he seems to do some damn fine work.

Dr. Deltron charges $300 for a paint job. Too expencive for me :(.
Check out Cyclart (http://cyclart.com/). They're expensive, probably $150 but good.
Why don't you just paint it with spray cans?

Only worth it for a true classic.
When I was your age I just rattle canned my dad's old Bianchi (no, it wasn't a good model or Celeste, so it wasn't as horrible as it may sound) and made do with that for a couple years. Unless this bike is worth substantially more than the powdercoating costs, I'd suggest going that route. If prepped well and allowed to cure for a while there's no reason a spray paint job can't look fine. It's just not as durable as auto paint or powdercoating. Plus it'll be good practice and you might find you enjoy it.
Olympic Powdercoating is a nice shop
But I could be a little bias
