Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - What do people think about single speed mtn.

I guess the only way people can get a single speed mountain bicycle is from a custom frame builder or do there own modifying.I asked myself the question why do people want that?...The answer is pobably because there in 2nd or 3rd most of the time anyway thats why?:roflmao:

1) bianchi sells a production single speed mountain bike.

2) singlespeeders coming in 2nd or 3rd most of the time? where do you place? 30th? don't underestimate the mass by your experience with a couple. a good friend of mine is ranked semi-pro and races singlespeed. and he's very, very fast. him and his team (composed of none other than Keith Bontrager and a bunch of other guys on singlespeeds) won their class at a 24 hours of adrenaline earlier this year, while he managed to win the fastest lap award.

Besides Bianchi there's also surly,spot,redline and I think Kona makes one too.Plenty of custom bldrs as well.Bianchi sells a couple diff models...one with disks one w/o.The DISS is freakishly light....and relatively cheap,try one at your local LBS,you will be suprised.

You can get a singlespeed by simply converting any existing hardtail frame.

You know it's pretty scary when Cannondale produces a Single Speed. Check out their website and the latest issue of Mountain Bike Action. Their bike is called the 1 FG. Anyone venture to guess what "F G" stands for?

My buddy and I are speculating the "G" stands for Gear, but since it's not a fixie, it rules that out for the "F". We think it's for "F$*king" gear.

Trials bikes are neat too.

I saw guys rocking SS MTBs at the 4th 24 Hours in the Old Pueblo. Been wanting to try an SS since but figured I'd start with one on the pavement first. :)

Surly's 1x1 frame is excellent for a SS MTB. It comes with disc tabs.

Also the Voodoo Wanga is really cool, too.

The Monocog 29er is available, out the door, for under $500. Its a bike that will take you as far as you want to ride it and won't let you down. Not to mention that its disc compatable, eaisly converts to fixed with a Tommicog, and will climb anything you have legs for! :love:

My first conversion was an old Trek 930. It was a bit big for me so found asmaller kona lavadome to convert. ItLs a blast to ride and my 13 yr old son uses it now, although just around the block withv his younger brothers.

The key is finding the magic gear to use without having to use a chain tensioner with vertical dropouts.

I have a Soma Juice, which is a 29er frame, with "Track ends" and a derailluer hanger. I also had a Voodoo Dambala, which was also a 29er with sliding dorpouts. SS MTB is much more common for "29er" riders for some reason.

I barely remember 2003. Half the people posting here were still in elementary school way back then.

my initial thought was "what the heck, this idiot doesn't know what he's talking about, EVERYONE makes a SS mtb" but yeah, back in 2003, bianchi was probably one of the only ones. this thread makes a lot more sense now, lol.

I am hoping to have my new ss built in the nest few weeks so I can enjoy some fall riding on the singletrack.
