BMX - BMX commuting?

Hey folks, I'm looking for a new bike to commute with and wanted to ask you guys for your expert opinions. I haven't ridden in years, as I just use my skatie to get from point a to b. At the moment I'm tossing up between a cruiser/chopper or a bmx, but I'm just not sure which one would be better for me? I've been looking at the DK cincinnati and the General Lee24, but Are BMX's annoying to commute on? If not, should I go 20" or 24"? I'm 5 4" if that makes any difference. how far's your commute? BMX is good for a zip around town, not so much for highwayage of course.

not too far 2-5km or so would be the general distance, but would probably take it on trains.

24" or 20"?

I could see that going well with a 20. I'd imagine it'd be better on a 24 of course. Either way, go for it. I ride all over campus and downtown on my 20, works just fine.

depends. do you want to be comfortable(er) or are you interested in freestyle?

Wouldn't mind trying to learn some tricks, but wanna be able to ride without feeling f***ed after 10 minutes. I do circus stuff, so I figure if I go a BMX instead of a cruiser/chopper, I need to be able to do some tricks, otherwise I might as well get a cruiser/chopper

why not just get a regular mtn bike. so much more comfortable if you gonna comute, IMO bmx bikes are farrrrrrr from comfortable

That's very true. If you're looking for the "cool factor", a jumpable bike, and something good for commutes a 26" is a good option. A couple cool ones are the Fisher Mullet (http://www.fisherbikes.com/bikes/bike_detail.asp?series=biggns&bike=Mullet_Single_Speed) or any of the Specialized P. series (http://www.specialized.com/bc/SBCBkModel.jsp?sid=07PBikes) bikes.

Been commuting some days to work on a 20" bike. It is 9 miles each way and I love it. I leave my house around 5:30 am and shower at a gym next to work. The ride home is more enjoyable because I can take my time and try manualing and hopping around. I also seem to have more energy. I hate it when it rains because I have to drive and be stuck in traffic.

bmx commuting sucks... i live three miles away from my classes, and my track bike was down for the count, so i was left with my bmx... three miles is a b!+@# when you're late for classes, but i agree with lacker.. if you have the time, manualing and hopping the **** on side walks and curbs is so fun when you're on your way to most things... but if you're late, make sure you arent going someplace where smelling good is key

Agreed. 24" cruiser wouldn't be bad either though... although it would be better to get a bike with multiple gearing and such.

Just get a cruiser and put a Nexus hub on it.
