Anybody have any advice on the best way to get autographs from riders? Where/when, proper etiquette, etc? I've never been to a big race before... are start/finish areas pretty much closed off to the public altogether?

Hire a small child to do it, they can't resist those little fellas. At the Greenville Classic criterium a 6 year old went to ask for Hincapie's autograph, but was really shy and didn't say anything(everybody was watching, cuz Hincapie had just shown up and was hanging out at the pit). Hincapie signed whatever it was, then the kid turned to walk back to his dad...but he stopped halfway, then turned around and ran back to Hincapie and gave him a big hug around his legs. Hincapie had already turned away and it caught him sorta by surprise and the dad was apologetic saying, "he's VERY affectionate." Hincapie gave him a huge smile. There was an audible "AWWWWWWWW" from the crowd.

At the prologue and time trial there's a lot more opportunity because the riders are doing a lot of waiting around. Each team has a staging area but the more famous teams' areas are harder to get to. The smaller teams sometimes have sessions where they sign posters and pose for photos.

Be polite. Ask nicely....don't just thrust out a bit of paper.

They're MUCH more approachable before a race than after a race, except time trials.
After the race, they usually high-tail it to the hotel.
Just be cool. They're real people.
Be respectful of their schedule.

Always bail pros up beforehand. Sneak into the village depart.

Being female may help. Grow some big tits, blonde hair and make sure you are hot looking. If not female you are probably behind the eight ball as the gender reassignment surgery won't likely heal before the race starts. In that case you may be looking at 2008. Good luck.
