A lady is standing outside my office at this very second talking to the lady in the next office. She is talking about some dental work she just had done. The Doctor told her NO SMOKING for 9 to 10 days. She was proud that she had a cig 3 hours after she got home. What really got my attention was when I heard her say(with enthusiasm) "I don't want to quit smoking". I started to say something but I held my tongue. Is it really possible some people ENJOY smoking SOOOOO much that they would rather smoke and deal with the consequences later than stop smoking. Maybe it's just an excuse because they know they will never have the willpower to quit. There are so many benefits to NOT smoke! There isn't even enough room to list everything. I mean I've never smoked(except a little grape vine when I was a kid), but this just seems like a ridiculous statement to me. Maybe some people live with other smokers and figure there is no way they would be able to quit while living them.....unless they all stopped. But to say you don't even want to quit. I'm sorry, but I just don't get it.
Both of my parents and my step-parents smoked. I inhaled enough smoke while growing up to last a lifetime. http://www.thesmilies.com/smilies/sick0001.gif http://www.thesmilies.com/smilies/sick0002.gif
Personally I'd be very happy if smoking was illegal. :D

Yes. Same reason people will enjoy drinking a lot then deal with a hangover later. Same reason people enjoy eating a lot of fried chicken then deal with being overweight later. Same reason people enjoy having unprotected sex then deal with the VD/pregnancy later. Same reason people enjoy speeding in their cars then deal with the ticket/accident later. And so on and so for and so on and so forth.
And I think the enthusiastic "I don't want to quit smoking" statement she made is more a defiant reaction to everyone getting in on the anti-smoking circle jerk. Who likes being told what to do and looked down upon?
Yes. I enjoy smoking. For whatever the validation, I enjoy it. :D
Maybe it's lack of will power, maybe blind ignorance or blatant disregard for the 'facts', maybe it's my damn life and I'll do with it as I want. Isn't it wonderfull that we ALL have the privlidge of directing our lives by our decissions? :)
From my cold dead hands.

I understand if someone likes it and doesn't want to quit.
Being proud of going against your dentist's advice, though, is just dumb.

A+, explody pup. I've been smoking for WAY too long, but have not had the will power to quit unless my husband joined me... quit 2x for pregnancy, but started back up. Now ole hubby HAS to quit (duh!), so I'll gladly join him in the battle of nicotine defeat.

I agree. People often go overboard trying to prove to the world that they're "keeping it real."
Puck keepin it real, I'm not repin fo anyone but me.

as a counter point, i hear stories all the time of people continuing to exercise despite doctors recommendations not to. people push the boundaries all the time, i think it's human nature.
however, it does seem rather pointless to go out of your way to visit a doctor and then purposely NOT take their advise.

Why do some people <place activity here>? I just don't get it.
It's not your life, so whether you get it or not is pretty much irrelevant, right? ;)

Dats a fact Jack. :)
Just the context of the statement the woman made is what got my attention. I had never heard anyone actually say that I guess. Just sorta caught me by surprise.
Hell, maybe I'll start smoking so I can "get it"............or not.
My GF's grandma has smoked so much and for so long that her doctor tells her not to quit. At her age, the sudden lack of nicotine would shock her system too much.

Coming from an ex-smoker: Yes.
You just wont get it (and you can be thankful, but not judgmental of others about it) until you are in it.

I quit July 14th 1999, had a bad time in September of 1999 and nearly started again managed not to, don't think about smoking that much any more.
Glad I did, at one point I used too smoke 40 a day (I could smoke at work at my desk)
Like the guy that just won the lotto but wants them to make an exception as he has 1 year to live and wants his money lump sum vs a 20 year payout like it's always been. Screw him I say. You chose to smoke and now you have in-op lung cancer. Wah wah wah.
If people want to smoke....great. I'm all for it. Don't make me breathe it and don't expect entitlements or special treatment when you are on the way out. Good for you. Better to leave a good looking corpse so your loved ones will remember how good you looked.
Be nice if my insurance rates wouldn't go up to cover smokers increased consummation of the health care field.

In PA you can get a lump sum pay out  Or, include the annuity in your estate

You're more than welcome to stop breathing. Go sit in your house or car. Not asking for 'special' just equal.

Which insurance rates are those? It would be nice if mine didn't go up because some stunod got all likkered up and wrapped his car around a pole. Fact of the matter is it's called the liability pool for a reason... The whole concept behind insurance. To share in the burden of risk.

Proof that there is such a thing as a stupid question.

Amen. I quit Dec. 11, 2006. Not a day goes by that I don't think about having a cigarette. I don't dwell on it, it's just a passing thought like "man, a cigarette would taste great right now."
Don't ever get started.

I didn't start smoking until I was about 50 yrs. old. Just an occasional cigar. Last year it evolved into those small packs of cigars. Never did inhale. But when I got back into cycling I noticed it had affected my breathing a bit. So, last month I just gave it up. Still, the thought of a smoke in the morning or after a meal is enticing.
C'mon guyz... My treat. Smoke 'em like they're goin' outa style!
I quit three years ago and still think about smoking at least once a day. To the OP, unless you intend to start hectoring fat people on the street, I would lay off the smokers too. Good decision to bite your tongue and just let it go.
I miss smoking because I do enjoy it so much. Tobacco is easily my favorite vegetable. Don't be so sure you would have the willpower to quit unless you have done it.

Is it whining or bragging I'm reading?

Sorry to hear about your father. My dad quit smoking when I was 8-years old. I finally got around to asking him because I had a friend that's trying to quit. Here's the response he sent me when I asked him how he did it:
Hi Dan: This is a good question Dan. The experience varies from person to person. For me it was mental determination that came after I realized how bad to my lung smoking was. I used to smoke 2 packs of cigarettes a day. One day I just blew the smoke slowly onto my thumbnail and saw a brown mark, I then blew it onto a wet paper towel, I saw a deeper brown mark. By simply multiplying that mark by the number of inhales x 20 cigarettes x 2packs/a day, I recognized pretty soon my lung would be filled with soot like a fireplace chimney. That was when I decided to stop smoking. I just simply quit it without using any of those quit-smoking tablets. I saw the danger and tried to stop before it did harm to me and consequently to the whole family.
Sorry to hear about your father. My dad quit smoking when I was 8-years old. I finally got around to asking him because I had a friend that's trying to quit. Here's the response he sent me when I asked him how he did it:That's awesome! AND the most unselfish thing he could do. Sorry to sound so brash on this but it's killed every person in my family to date! I am the only one in my family not to smoke and we only have one left that does(she sounds like hell and can't imagine what's coming next).
People like to reference the one 'old guy' on the block and how he smoked his a$$ off until he was 90. Well, I just lost 5 co-workers to smoking related carp in 3 years and they were all under 45 years young. No one else I know is gonna die like that! I'll badger em until they wanna kick my a$$, I don't care. Because I DO care. :)
Smoke long enough and it will be on your death cert.

Good for you, but I doubt it will do anything.
Smoking is not something you stop because some dude keep pestering you about it. It has to come from inside of you. From so deep inside, that not even the constant craving can change it. No one can give that feeling to someone else, it has to be done individually. As an ex-smoker, I always hated people like you, because they judge without knowing. You don't know what it is, and you certainly wont - That's a good thing, yes. But stop being so condescending with your ignorance.
I've stopped cold-turkey, not saying it to brag. It was hard as all heck, and no you wouldn't have made a dim of a difference in my decision. Nor do I know of any smoker that would be influenced by your anti-smoking plagiarism.
Good for you, but I doubt it will do anything.
agreed. people bugging you to quit when you're not ready to quit are pains in the ass, and are doing nothing other than being a pain in the ass.
when someone wants to quit they will.
the whole 'i tried to quit X amount of times' is bullsh!t. you either quit, or you don't. there's no 'try' involved.

Smoke, Smoke, Smoke That Cigarette Written by Merle T ravis and Tex Williams
Now I'm a feller with a heart of gold
And the ways of a gentleman I've been told
The kind of guy that wouldn't even harm a flea
But if me and a certain character met
The guy that invented the cigarette
I'd murder that son-of-a-gun in the first degree
It ain't cuz I don't smoke myself
And I don't reckon that it'll harm your health
Smoked all my life and I ain't dead yet
But nicotine slaves are all the same
At a pettin' party or a poker game
Everything gotta stop while they have a cigarette
Smoke, smoke, smoke that cigarette
Puff, puff, puff and if you smoke yourself to death
Tell St. Peter at the Golden Gate
That you hate to make him wait
But you just gotta have another cigarette
Now in a game of chance the other night
Old Dame Fortune was a-doin' me right
The kings and the queens just kept on comin' round
And I got a full and I bet 'em high
But my bluff didn't work on a certain guy
He just kept on raisin' and layin' that money down
Now he'd raise me and I'd raise him
I sweated blood, gotta sink or swim
He finally called and didn't even raise the bet
So I said "aces full Pops how 'bout you?"
He said "I'll tell you in a minute or two
But right now, I gotta have me a cigarette"
Smoke, smoke, smoke that cigarette
Puff, puff, puff and if you smoke yourself to death
Tell St. Peter at the Golden Gate
That you hates to make him wait
But you just gotta have another cigarette
(Ah, smoke it! Hah! Yes! Yes! Yes!)
The other night I had a date
With the cutest little girl in the United States
A high-bred, uptown, fancy little dame
She loved me and it seemed to me
That things were 'bout like they oughta be
So hand in hand we strolled down lover's lane
She was oh so far from a cake of ice
And our smoochin' party was goin' nice
So help me cats I believe I'd be there yet
But I give her a kiss and a little squeeze
And she said, "ah, Marty, excuse me please
I just gotta have me another, cigarette"
And she said, smoke, smoke, smoke that cigarette
Puff, puff, puff and if you smoke yourself to death
Tell St. Peter at the Golden Gate
That you hate to make him wait
But you just gotta have another cigarette
