Mountain Biking - What size bike for me???

Hi All,

Great site.

I am looking for a used MB and I am 6'tall. Could you give me some general guidelines in what size bike would be right for me in brands like, KONA, Santa Cruz and Insane. I am looking for a good deal on an all around bike, I guess a Trail Bike. I have an old Reflex that's on the small side and it has no suspension at all. I need some cushion for my wrists, so I figure I might as well get a bike that I can grow with.

I am average in reach and leg. I wear a 33 length pant, so I figure I can fit in most average sizes.

Any help would be appreciated.

There is no way We can size you from our computers so please take this with a grain of salt. Of course it depends on the bike itself, but perhaps a Med or Large, Or 17 to 19. A trip to your local bike shop would answer this for sure.

You'd probably be a large (19" ish), but as bahick said above, check out your local bike shop for exact fitting. The other thing is, some people like to ride a bike that's slightly smaller for them... Riding the bikes is your best bet.

Is a trail bike the best all around type or are the other machines that would suit me better. I am a creaky boned 40 yr old that needs to get back into riding. Used to do quite a bit, but the tech has changed so much. Too much information out there now.

When I was shopping for a new mountain bike recently, I hadn't ridden in about 3 years. When I quit and sold the mountain bike 3 years ago, I was riding a hard tail. It was what I liked at the time, and I pretty much had my mind set on the idea that I would get another hard tail.

I shopped around for a good 2 months, and rode a ton of bikes. My local bike shop even has demo versions of some of their bikes that you can actually take out and ride on the trails. Long story short, I actually ended up with a full suspension Gary Fisher Cake 3. I guess it's still considered a standard "trail" bike, but I guess my point is that you will never really know what you prefer until you ride a lot of different bikes. Even if you're looking to pick up something used, my only advice would be to ride as many bikes as you can, and choose the one you like :D

What kind of riding will you be doing? Mostly established bike trails and such?

Go in and ride 17s and 19s.

Yeah, mostly established stuff. Irelly need to get my endurance back where is was and in shape for MX. I don't think that I can go wrong with a good trail bike with decent suspenders. I am very into stuff and I don't want to get out of hand with all this, "stuff" Don't get me wrong, I like "stuff", but I have so much stuff that if I get too much more stuff and need a new place to sleep, with all my stuff.

I'll suggest, 17, 18 or 19. The shop is the place to find the right one.
